Is this a Gearbox oil leak?

Don't suppose anyone has photos of the actual leak.

I noticed a black line on the join as well. Have wiped it clean but not convinced its a leak...could just be grime mixing with the FS365. :nenau

Any pointers would be appreciated.

I too am about to go on a ten day trip.
There are some photos on the ADVRider web site, mine just looks like a thin line that I thought was just the edge of the joint but when I rubbed a figure along it was black and oily. It can't be much of a leak and whilst I'm going to see the dealer about it I'm still going away on the bike, it might have been like this since new. If I clean it off and ride around for about 50 miles it just about becomes noticeable again, if it is a leak it is only a tiny one, I don't get any drops and there's no sign on the protruding engine base underneath the joint. Obviously, there shouldn't be any oil there so I want it fixed but I can't imagine it's urgent that it's fixed so I'm off to do about 4000 miles on hols.

Thanks.

Just had a look and my suspicions are being confirmed that its the early stages of a leak. Warranty runs out in little over a month so will take it in and see what they say.

Saying that though, did about 100miles today and no sign after cleaning it this morning. So will keep an eye on it.

First noticed a slight oil line around the gearbox/engine joint on the offside, about a month ago. Didn't think much about it until last week end when I noticed more evidence of a leak at the just above the front of the cat. convertor.

Bike going into Clarks in Dundee on Thursday to get repaired under warranty.
They has suggested that its a two day job. They did a similar job last week.

(Yellowfello, my bikes warranty runs out at the start of October. However I would like to think that if it had happened a "reasonable" time after that then they would still have treated it as warranty)

That all depends on how charitable your dealer is feeling, and what mood BWM are in when they are approached for funding the cost of repairs. I wouldn't bet on getting any assistance past your warranty end date. I tried to claim just outside warranty for front brake judder and got declined, even though the dealers tried their best to get me a warranty repair.

Its the last time I blow ten grand on a bike :spitfire :spitfire :spitfire (until the next time........ ).

Hi EMOTO, when you say the breather on the top of the engine, do you mean its blocked or summink? :o

Panzer Patrol, I never did learn exactly what was wrong with the breather. They simply said it was defective. It was the source of the leak; that much I can say. The oil trickled out from the breather and found its way down that seam between the engine and tranny.

JayGee, I do not know the exact location, but it is supposed to be on top of the transmission.

Bob (not your uncle :D )

Found the breather and its not trickling out of there, it starts lower down the engine casing not at the top near the breather. Just got back from the dealers who say it's a gearbox oil seal (they've had a few) that is weeping when it gets hot. They say it needs fixing but will be OK for my holiday trip. They removed the gearbox filler plug to make sure the level hadn't dropped.

They are going to see what BMW say about a FOC repair as it's only about a month outside the warranty, I'll post when I get an answer, apparently first stage is a computer system that can approve or decline the FOC repair, next stage is a person so we'll see what happens. They are hopeful that I'll get a favourable answer!

The dealer claimed not to recieved the update software to cure the auxilary power loss problems- seems very odd as several on here have said they've had it from their dealer. :nenau

well took the bike in this morning to Dalkieth after discovering a slight oil drip underneath last night and they had a look.

They reckon it the balancing shaft seal, and although it can't be replaced before I head to europe next week, they reckon its okay. The seal is just startng to go they say. And its a tiny mist.

Warranty runs out on 23rd Sept and its booked in to get done on 26th, but its all good, as being done under warranty.

have to say they didn't quibble looking at it and no questions and reassuring. top service. :thumb
