Collected my bike today after having a Brand new engine fitted this being the latest and greatest !! heavy flywheel and I've done 40 miles home journey today after collecting it, on my route home i notice engaging 1st gear loud clonk being wip-lash from the drive and bike jerks forward (my mate following me in the car also can hear me engaging 1st gear) going up the box 2 - 3 clonking, not nice.

Once home, bike on centre stand or paddock stand, clutch in engage 1st gear, rear wheel spins with the clutch in and you cannot stop this by hand or foot on tyre.

Also tried engine off, clutch in, 1st gear selected and start bike with clutch in, wheel spins exactly the same, i also tried holding the wheel whilst starting the bike and the pull on the wheel is a lot.

FFS this engine feels worse than the one they took out and that was perfect apart from it leaked water.

CLUTCH DRAG ! I thought the reason they put the heavy flywheel is to eliminate all this .

Is this the second bike's second engine?

Yep 1st 2013 bike tried to kill me and this is the 2014 replacement bike.

Second bikes original engine (light flywheel) leaked water due to porous crank case, so they fitted the latest engine (heavy flywheel) and apart from it don't leak water its far worse plus the heavy flywheel has taken the edge off the bike but i can live with that .

Yes they all have some clutch drag - the heavier flywheel is for smoother lower rev running I believe, nothing to do with clutch drag.

Could it be that the clutch line needs bleeding ?
good call..it sounds to simple to be true! mine was lurching forward about 2ft with the clutch in until my mate bled the line and adjusted the lever for more pull:blast..transformed the bike

I would also make sure they have not overfilled the engine with oil, which has been reported to make for worse gear changes.

I got a new engine just over a week ago, replaced due to corrosion ,did 300 miles last Sunday, and it feels and runs great, slightly tight as you would expect , clunks into first but no lurch.

The workshop had an issue when fitting, there was no drive, told me a clutch plate was incorrectly fitted.

Ding, sounds like you have same issue I had...check PM from me...

If you can't stop the wheel by foot or by hand then you clearly have a clutch problem, for whatever technical reason that people can divulge. A complete new clutch pack sorted my similar experience.

I also thought this because when going up the box into second especially I'm getting a bit of lurch/snatch as if the clutch lever ain't pulled in, i tried the lever at no4 position and still the same, ill have a gander tomorrow and may bleed the system.

Tbh the gearbox on piddies GSA demo was slick, 1st gear not even a clonk just snicks into gear like a hot knife thro butter, now my new engine (not fitted by piddies) thats apparently the same is not so slick .

I don't make these issues up and there not in my head either, what i find is because I'm mechanical minded i no when something is not right.

Hi, 2014 model GS WC with light flywheel, slight clutch drag when engage 1st gear, but nothing unusual, also can stop rear wheel with ease..

Sounds like something's wrong, don't fiddle, take it back.. :rob

At this point I would be so peed off I would refuse the bike and be switching to another brand. 2 bikes with major issues no way I could stand that.
It's got to be unlucky to get an issue bike let alone two. Hope you've got some sort of compensation

Bmw wanted to go down this road with me.....I moved to another brand.....best move I ever made.

Bloody hell Dave! You're not shagging the CEO of BMW's wife by any chance??

Someone in Bavaria definitely doesn't like you fella as you seem to be getting more than your fair share if problems - hope this one is easy to sort.

Tbh I've gone past caring, i think the dealer is probably more pissed off with everything, fitting the engine probably took them twice as long as the covered all the frame up in protected tape, so when i got the bike back it was totally unmarked and looked no different from a brand new bike. (That feeling didn't last long tho)

I think some others brands have similar issues Unless you buy HONDA, If i walked than I'm doing bmw a favour and someone else would have the issues so I'm going to stick it out and exercise the warranty to its full.
