Could it be welded underneath? Or can I just leave it alone.?

I reckon, if you had the inclination, you could take it off and brace it from the inside. There's a fairly consistent wall thickness on those, so there is space to get something into the cavities and screw it all together.

Saying all that, just search the web for another one...

Nothing that I can find on ebay

put a wanted post up in the FS section. got to be a few of these kicking about from when people have converted the GSA type to the GS dual seat setup. then get the braces that stop this from happening in the first place. its a common fracture point.

I would try and find a replacement, You could weld that from the front or rear then re-finish, you would probably want to blast it first to remove all of the paint finish both sides, however you need to be aware that that is a cast part, in order to make the metal flow better in the casting process zinc is added to the ali (along with other stuff) the purpose is as I say to allow the metal to flow easily into the mould however it also makes it a real PIA to weld, most welders will call that "shit" metal.

In order to get a good job you need to find a very good welder with good equipment, and knowledge of ali welding and in particular welding high zinc content cast ali. Best of luck.

I consider myself reasonably competent, I have argon/Tig welder etc etc. I take mine somewhere else for repairs like that, as I know enough to know that I dont have the requisite skill.

Good advice, thank you.

The best way is undoubtedly to weld said item ,

If thats not reasonable, you could always drill and add reinforcing plates / gussets as required

It wont look pretty, but ...

The risk with repairing something of that material, that the weld will be stronger that the original material, and in doing the repair, you run the risk of further cracks at the point of weld

motor works part numbers

Fantastic, thank you. Reckon I'll give them a ring tomorrow, just hope they have one in stock. ( I looked at everything except luggage!)

... and invest in the braces mentioned earlier :thumb
