Or is this it on the front of the engine casing?
The one by the oil filler is the engine number. It should match the frame number if original .On later models, ‘84 model year on I think, the number is found lower left on the block and follows a different numbering system to the vin/frame number.

Thanks Paul, both numbers stamped on the engine are different to what’s on the V5!
My VIN on the frame is 2963878. Is there any superstar out there who can access BMW records to see if the frame VIN is linked to either of the numbers on the engine (6004424 or 157518) please?

The numbers on the front of the engine are practically meaningless.
