No cross reference

....the rather attractive lady at the motor factors in Anger...(it was blazingly hot here yesterday and she was brazenly hot with a very low cut top on!)........the factor was actually called Auto Distribution or AD for all the local mechanics.....really new her stuff....

.....she had all the relevent catalogues and computers cranked up and nowhere was there a cross reference number for that particular starter. A ''man'' was summoned from the workshop and he did'nt recognise the starter either.

I went to another big factors across the 'rue' and same story......no cross reference numbers there either.......

Anyway, I have to ask the question.....''if the GS really is an ''Adventure'' bike why is there no kick starter fitted as well as the electric foot as a back up?''........they cannot be worried about adding weight surely?......I want to know how they can make a twin cylinder ''off road'' bike so heavy.....they must be using Heavyminium where ever possible!

We all know the GS is very sensitive to battery condition if it is going to start.....so if you are out and about in a desert or jungle somewhere and your battery amps drop a little low where do you plug in your charger to top up for a successful start?......and I have found that sand, mud or excess leaf litter on the ground does not offer enough grip for easy bump starting!

....and while I am on my soap box......who in their right mind would locate the battery under the tank.....and so high up........I suppose their thinking was there is already 60 or more pounds of weight sloshing around up there in the petrol tank, whats another 10lbs going to do?, I might as well stick the battery up there as well!.........and is'nt the battery so quickly and easily accessible!

Many thanks for the e-bay site about the new OEM starters.....but it's stable door and horses for me....but I have added it to favourites for the next time!.....so please for the future, can everybody put all the stuff I'll need up on the site before I need it please so I can save loads of money, time and effort.....not too much to ask is it?....

are they called that 'cos of the way the motor jumps when you apply the power (assuming it does spin and you haven't restrained it)?

probably.

one day i did this with a vauxhall wedged front first into my lock up. i didn't bother with jump leads, just left it connected, resting on the cam cover.

climbed over the wing, under the bonnet to get out as it was a tight fit. got in the cab and turned the key while peering between bonnet and scuttle to see if the starter worked.

it did. it jumped off the top of the motor and disappeared from view. positive terminal landed on, and cut through the metal petrol pipe, which started squirting petrol 3 ft in the air. this jet of fuel then caught fire :blast

don't panic! so release handbrake, jump back over engine bay, through flames to get to the front of the car and push it out of the lock up. dig out hot starter motor from the geyser of fire by hand and place somewhere safe. put out fire. replace section of wiring loom burnt to feck.

at least i found out the starter motor was ok :D

since then, i've always removed them from the vehicle and fixed them in the vice before testing. well, mostly i have anyway :mmmm

Here 's the problem

P1020386.jpg

....the flat round metal plate is the grease sheild from the planetary gearbox in the starter......it ''should '' be securely pressed into place for life!......

....somehow or other it had become disloged....slid forward onto the armature spindle, and short circuited the whole caboodle!!!!....

...you can tell from the colours it had got pretty darn hot in there!....third party fire and theft anyone?.....if you look at the central hole in the sheild you can see where some of the metal has actually vapourised away!.....the plate had welded itself to the armature spindle......the puckered ring (ooo er missus!) of burn marks around the sheild shows where the plate was up against the copper windings on the armature very clearly also getting bleedin' 'ot!......

...if this is what OEM stuff does surely a pattern part cannot be any worse!
