Same rules apply if your bringing the bike in from Spain or Italy, as they are both part of the EU.

Speedo info.
Don't know if this helps but my GS is a real one (born in Germany & bought in Germany) and the speedo is in KM/H and has no alternate MPH markings.
You may have to change the speedo for one that reads in MPH, I believe that they cost around £85-00 or so for a brand new one. Not sure if you have to change any gearing for the speedo but apparently the gear ratios are listed on the speedo drive so you can order a MPH one for whatever gearing the Spanish GS has.
Other GS'ers may have better knowledge on the changing from KM/H to MPH speedos.
I've just taken some luminous gunsight paint and dotted the speedo face where the equivalent MPH reading is and by keeping the needle hovering just under the painted on markings, I'm doing around the proper speed limit on UK roads. And, when the bike has done 30 000km's you could then consider getting a MPH speedo & think that you've got a new bike again!
If the bike was built with metric measurements, KM/H it should be.
And that, dear tossers, should open up a whole new debate! hehehehehe

Not sure that I can really offer anything to this (but I just wanted to post as I am also new), I live in Holland (The Hague) and I recently bought an 1100GS. This has no mph on the clocks the same as the German and continental versions (Having two sets of units on the speedo is something unique to the UK I think), however I don't see why you would need to change the whole speedo assembly, why don't you just get some of those stickers that they used to use for so many grey imports (like my brother's old CBR400), if you stick them on, I see no reason why it should fail an MOT, and if it does, then you're only back where you were anyway, and speedo units are usually really expensive.
Also I think you might have to pay some import tax when you import it to the UK (you need to check this), but if, for example, I wanted to import a UK to Holland, I would have to prove that I had owned it for 6 months prior to bringing it over in order to avoid this.

There are no mph markings on Euro bikes. The stick on disc is however acceptable.
What you should do is call BMW GB and they will send you a form listing the documents that you will need to present to them to get the "certificate of conformity" from them which will enable you to get the bike registered in the UK with the DVLA
You will need:
Copy of original (Spanish) reistration document
Copy of Bill of sale
Certificate stating that the bike has been set to UK specs, issued by an official BMW dealer. These specs will involve the h'light, the speedo and bizarrely, the indicators (this last is not 100% sure and I think that a friendly dealer would let it through on the nod anyway)
On your ride up from Spain you should stop chez nous and partake of our 5-star hospitality. You'll ride over us anyway....
