I generally found the dealer here in Bayonne, SW France to be good. I had a quick moan about the toolkit and the second key (see I have been paying attention!) - we'll see what comes of it.

I've obviously been out for a bit of spin up into the mountains in these parts - perhaps it might have been better to start somewhere else - read on! I went up a very windy single lane road that links Itxassou to the Pas de Roland. Unfortunately on one hair pin going up, I got in the wrong gear, stalled and very nearly put the bike on it's side. Good job I'm fairly large, 'cos it took all 6'7" and half a lifetime of playing second row, to catch it and pick it up! A couple of walkers going passed were very bemused! Result was a small rub on the black plastic cylinder protector - but nothing noticeable! Just a big dent in the pride! Anyway, round the next bend some lunatic comes shooting round, locks up all 4 wheels and nearly hits me - I took evasive action off the side - didn't even have time to kick the car! The various ponies, donkies and ramblers I found further on all paled into insignificance after that lot.

Anyway, did 140km in beautiful sunshine and found some superb roads. Shame I have to keep below 4,000revs but it was brilliant fun anyway.

Congrats! Lucky indeed to have it, and lucky BMW made it a lot lighter than a 1150GS or that could have been a very sad hairpin! I can identify with your excitement as I am waiting on mine next week or the week after! New bike and a wonderful place to ride! Enjoy! :thumb

Think you've learnt the first lesson..... engine bars are a must!

I've got the SW-Motech ones which have taken a hammering (feckin big dent where the bike came off the stand.... very glad I had them!), so I'm happy I didn't go out and spend £200. OK, so I'll probably get nice stainless bars next year when I'm used to the bike and (hopefully) not dropping it as much, but I really can't fault mine for half the cost.

Got to agree with Wizard mine have taken a bit of a hammering and still fine best bit is when i want to tidy them up just take them off and hammerite them good as new. I will be buying another pair for next bike. IMHO the shiny look of stainless just goes off the boil plus something else to clean :(

V nice, v shiny. If you want do some miles before the weather gets English, I'd be happy to ride point. Send me a private message, if you like, I can't seem to make it work on this site. Perhaps it's because I don't have a GS.

Your new pride and joy

I agree with the advice already given - fit some crash bars now. I have the standard S/S BMW ones as I had on my prevous 1150 and they always looked as good as new - and the 1150 did seem to fall over too often whereas the 1200 has not, after a year, yet tested the bars.
( I don't think that some of our friends in the UK will really ever believe that we do not get much typical English weather here ! ) Enjoy the rest of the summer and then carry on ! Brian

Sweet sweet bike UKB.

You'll be so glad you chose the sexiest, fastest, most beautiful colour too.

btw - the TEL quote is great too.

Thanks - it looks so much nicer now it's arrived - I particularly like the black panels!

The TEL quote is one of my favourites - though I am very fond of quotations - I have The Times "Book of Quotations" at the side of my desk at all times. :geek:

To quote Churchill " It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations." :thumb

Hey, nice bike Basque, get her run-in then go play with the revs, you will feel the power above 5500 rpm when she gets her second wind as she nears the redline. :D :D :D

Glad you got the GS in the end over a Pan/VFR etc. once you get some serious miles under your belt on her it will all make sense. A real 'swiss-army knife' motorcycle.

I have Hepco-Becker bars on my faster Red GS12 and these are painted silver which chips off easily. My mates slower Blue GS12 has the BWM stainless bars which have a much nicer finish. Whatever you buy, get some bars asap as those plastic head covers ain't up to much in comparison.
