I have just become the proud owner of a 2002 gs1150. It's not been on the road for the last 4 years. It's now MOT'd and basics such as engine oil/brakes etc have been checked but I could do with a couple of pointers. Please accept my apologies as I'm sure these issues will seem daft to some of you and I'm sure will have been answered many times before so....

1. To check rear transmission oil I take it the drain plug is the one on the bottom and the filler/level plug is the one part way up the "external" side of the casting? Is it a case of fill up to yhr filer plug level?

2. How do I check the gearbox oil?

3. Is there such a thing as a Haynes manual or similar?

I'm looking forward to a bit of tinkering and although my bike is fine I want to give it some TLC to get it just how I want it. Your advice would be very much appreciated.

Bottom one is the drain. The top is the filler - its the right level when there is oil at the bottom of the threads of the filler hole.

2. How do I check the gearbox oil?

Two plugs on the RHS of the bike one above the other - in front of the pegs. Top is the filler, bottom is the drain. "Full" is when no more oil will fit it and runs out the top.

Both this and final drive use EP 80-90 API-GL5. Halfords or any car shop will have it. 250ml for final drive, 1 Litre for gearbox.

3. Is there such a thing as a Haynes manual or similar?

There is indeed, I have the haynes. Also a Clymer manual which is pretty much the same. Also search for BMW repair manual 1150gs on google, its free to download and is the manual used in the dealerships. (By free I mean "free" but you get the idea).

You can get a haynes manual with all info in ...

Fill final drive to plug level while on center stand ...

Just change the gear box oil if stood for 4 years ......

Maybe's your altinator belt to , oh and your fuel filter and engine oil to

Might aswell do your brake fluid to ...........

Halfords sell the manuals ......

Probably preaching ...
but always remove the filler plug first! If you remove the drain and then cannot undo the filler you have to turn the bike upside down to refill

It's obvious when someone points it out, but not something I'd ever considered. Fortunately, never had that problem so far.

Thankyou for the advice. It appears that I am also the proud owner of the correct fluids in the correct places. Good start. Now for the tinkering.
