My mate raced against John and another rider, both were at Superbike magazine at the time (1996) and were regular rostrum finishers alongside my mate, so I got to know him a tiny bit, and he was a really good fun bloke, was surprised when I heard of his move to war reporting.
He seemed to largely manage to keep up that fun personality throughout his time in serious peril, and was clearly a fucking tough and very clever cookie to survive as he did for so long....
...I just wish he had stuck with clowning around on Motorbikes.
