JohnGS1100 Tuning Chip

Mine's still going strong, no surges at all, consumption went down ( not very much but noticable anyway ! ), still a satisfied customer ;)

Hi everyone

I have received a new version of the chip for my US 1150GSA running on US 91 octane. I haven't installed it yet as I wanted to go step by step. In the meanwhile Nightrider has sent me a new harness and module. Therefore, to ensure that everyting is fine, I reinstalled the original chip, and fitted the new AFxied harness. Did around 1000km of highway, backroads and dirtroads with the new harness. Everything works fine. Next step is to install John's new version of the chip in order to benefit from increased ignition advance for better efficiency under low load (highway cruising). Has anyone fitted a chip AND the AFxied module? I am leaving in a few days to the Mississippi Delta, which is probably a 6,000km ride from Montreal. trying to make sure I won't get problems during the journey.

John, just to confirm, the new chip you sent me is for US 91 octane fuel, right? Label says "Low Octane" but I am can be confused by what is "low octane" accvording to Euro standard. ;-)

Yes Lee. It is for 89-91 octane petrols. The AFR is richer, the timing advance is slower than stock and the dweel map (time of ignition) is little high for more power. You can burn very low octane petrol now by NO PINGS, by more power, i m very sure now for that.

I do not know what will about consumption because the AFR is 5% richer than stock.

Try it and let us know please :)

Last year I bumped into a member of this forum (in Bournemouth) and he told me about the chips from John Gemi... I then ordered one for my 97 high mileage R1100RT It had then done about 160k miles

The stage 5 chip John provided was great with really good torque improvements and slightly better fuel consumption and so I ordered one for a mate of mine.....as it happened John and I got our wires crossed and I ended with a chip for an R1100GS... I had a chat with John about it and have now installed that chip along with the longer narrower GS inlets and jumpers for the CCP as John instructed in my R1100RT which now has 195k miles on it....

I was blown away at the increased bottom and mid range torque but the biggest shock was/is the improved fuel consumption

I was averaging 46 ish to the gallon with the stage 5 chip and when I ran with the new chip and the inlet mods I got 54 mpg....thinking that I had done my sums wrong yesterday I checked again today and it is doing 54 mpg....as a bike courier that is a huge saving of about 17%...I am thrilled skinny with it. For £50 or thereabouts this is a superb mod, if you don't do it you want your bumps felt!

Thanks Steve. The stage 7 chip from R1100GS by the narrow intake air tubes and CCP 30,87,87a all these is the perfect setup for the best torque at low and middle rpms to R1100RT.

Now we should make a fine tuning to the chip for working more perfect to your R1100RT.

The only difference from R1100RT and R1100GS is the bigger camshafts (RT). That gives only little more power at very high rpms 6.700+ to RT.
I think it is worth the more torque at low and middle rpms by the much more better consumption, there is huge difference.

Chip discussion in Bournemouth

really glad you "heard" me when we spoke about the chip :aidan. I remember the conversation outside Aris jewellers.
I'm still running a Stg4v2 in mine which performed brilliantly on a 4500mile tour of Italy and right down to Corfu.
Best regards, Sean

Hi Sean. I made a new update stage 7 chip for your bike. Give me your address please via pm and i will send it yo you.
There are new mod maps, better function on high temps and more burn time to sparks (that called dweel map) that give the more power especially at high rpms by better consumption..!

Hello long time no chat im still on the stage 4 chip on my twin spark r1150rt will up grade soon but my bike broke down last week the battery packed up so I'm having upgrade to a 30 amp hr battery will modify a few things to make it fit just need good cranking power in the winter will upgrade to stage 7 soon might need a air filter mine is nearly black just bought a single spark r1150gs waiting for chip for that looking forward to it .

I want tell to all friends who use the stag4 chip.
I can send the new better stage 7 chip, just send via pm the details of bike and address please.
It is worth, the power and final speed is much more up.

Thanks :beerjug:

#7 Chip

John,
Received #7 chip today thank you.
Hope to have enough time this weekend for a full tune up and re-chip.
Will report back.

I finally managed to install the Stg 7 chip & tune up the other week on my 850GS. All went really well and the test drive was somewhat more exciting than in standard form, pulls very smoothly thru the rev range with what feels like about 20-30% more oomph than before. However, the best part of this remap is the improvement in general driveability which became apparent in my 10 mile commute to work every day through twisty 'B' roads. It basically allows you to drive as before but with a lot less wrist twisting so you can easily keep two fingers resting on the brake lever and rev up through the gears, then when you need to blat past a car you simply apply a bit more twist and your gone, before I would of had to consider changing down another gear and keep twisting to find the throttle stop.

And then Stg 7.1 turned up!!! I contacted John to say thanks but I had already fitted the #7.0 and was very happy but he insisted that I should change it anyway.

The improvement in drivability is still there with the smooth rise thru the revs but you definitely feel a bigger thump going on down below, and then I opened up the throttle.....
It picks up really quickly and powers you up to 5k rpm, then there is this howling noise, the front end gets very light and your (my) eyeballs start wobbling. Christ on a bike it's quick! When I stopped laughing I headed off down some twisty country roads just using 2nd & 3rd gears and it was mental, took me back to my younger years scratching on my CBR6.

So now I have a practical easy to ride well mannered bike to get me to work every day and then when the weekend comes I simply opt for a lower gear and a bit more wrist action and I've got a laugh a minute back road belter. Fantastic work John, thank you!

I installed the stage 7 John chip to my original exhaust '98 R1100GS and am getting similar benefits to the above users - in a word its just great!
More oomph and torque. More confidence in overtaking quickly. Can stay a gear high than before.
Question to John and others - if I change to a cat free exhaust like the Remus or the cheaper Dominator, will my new chip cope? Do I simply need to make the appropriate mods to the CCP? or will I need to use a different chip?
BTW - what are opinions on the 2 exhausts I mentioned?

Yes you can change the cat by y-pipe and another exhaust the AFR will be ok by the stage 7 chip and the bike will run perfect at high revs.

Hi john do you have an upgrade for stage 7 for the 850R 1996?

Yes. I made a stage 8 for R850R old model. The special maps is the dwell maps that means expand ignition timing advance to the spark, that's gives 100 % fuel burn, more power especially at high revs (more final speed) and much more better consumption at high revs. The final speed by this stage is 205 Km/h.
Has your bike fress air filter or de-cat exhaust, lambda or co-pot ?

I have a k&n air filter and a Dominator exhaust. I have co pot and no lambda sensor
