Please confirm before I blow the damned thing up....

Have you got a job lot of those yellow marker pens Ritchie ??
Wot u could do is get the jump starter kit they're now fitting on the '04 bikes. Pos terminal exits through starter motor cover with rubber cover, neg screws into cylinder head on left side
While the surface may look rusty .. it is what is under the nut that counts. I'd bet that it is still clean. But a clean up would not go astray. A rubber boot over the top filled with grease would be good.
It shouldn't cause any problems provided it's not a 24v lorry or bus that your using to jump from!
The fact that a car has a bigger battery helps the process - the car battery won't be drained so quickly by topping up the flat bike battery or starting the bike.
The alternator (either the car's or the bike's) will reduce its output as the battery voltage increases. That voltage increases as the charge state improves. So provided it's all notional 12v kit, it should be OK.
It works fine and is much quicker than doing it from underneath the petrol tank. Thanks for the advice. Oh and by the way I've done it a few times already and the electrics are holding up O.K. My new battery arrives after the bank holiday...
