I'm doing a trip to Nepal later this year (civil war permitting) with a friend on two R12Gss. I've had the first one for a month and the second arrived yesterday.

Comparison between the bikes is interesting. They both have that 'clunk' from the transmission when opening the clutch so I guess they really do all do that, sir. The suspension on the 2nd bike is setup differently and it makes a world of difference. I havent yet measured the difference but if feels like the back is raised and the front forks dropped. Significantly better into turns.

The 2nd bike has a lower seat. I didnt realise this until it was delivered and immediately asked them if they'd change it (they said yes) but having ridden it now I'm not so sure I dont prefer it. I dont need it lower to get my feet down but the shape of the seat is different and *much* more comfortable on the bum. Being lower the pillion seat gives lower back support plus the contact patch is wider at the back and it tilts you forward into the tank much less.

The 2nd bike has an annoying tick tick tick noise from just behind the cylinder on both sides which is absent on the first bike. A thread on advrider suggests this might be tight throttle cables.

Overall, interesting how different two apparently identical bikes can be.

I've had my 12GS eight weeks. It was only today (and 2,200 miles later) that I noticed the 'clunk'. I am sure it didn't do this before - but yes, just as I'm opening the clutch I can definitely hear/feel the 'clunk'. I was just thinking "Now What?" The only reason why I came to the Forum tonight was to check out if there were other posts on the 'clunk'. Anyone else confirm that's 'normal'?

Cheers. :thumb

[Edited]: Yep, just searched the forum and seems 'clunk' is normal. Thanks to Mouse and Gonzo for explaining that. :bow [Edited again! I've been searching again...] and thanks to ktmmark and Scoomacher for a couple of good posts in 05 and 04. Good link by ktmmark (http://www.roadkill.com/~davet/moto/trans.articles.html) - put my mind nicely at rest and I can't wait to give the gear lever a bit more pressure whilst letting out the clutch.

Is yours the one parked by "The Tram" every day then, with a Silver 1150 ADV? :nenau

I thought I knew Cambridge quite well...but not sure where "The Tram" is. Needless to say, not mine. Mines blue with grey pannels and is likely to be down near Perne Road.

..the one thing I HATE about my 1200 is the 'clunky' clutch! I have posted about this before so won't go on about it... but boy.. in slow traffic.. "clunk clunk clunk"... I hate it!!! can't control the clutch without "clunk"!!!!..

going now... starting to rant!!!!...

"The Tram Depot" is a pub  on Dover St, close to the Grafton Centre :thumb
