Looking for a way out
I've just wired in the quest to my new bike and gave it ago.

Hmm - no work.

:blast remembered that quest is 5.5v not 12v.

Doesn't work now :( is there an internal fuse? Back to Gamin?

Whoops, sorry to hear that. I presume that you wired a RAM cradle using a car lead but you cut the speaker/cigar lighter bit off and wired up the trailing lead to the bike :nenau

Back to Garmin, you live and learn.

If it's out of warranty then I'm not sure what Garmin charge for a service exchange for a Quest these days but it might be worth you getting a new one from MNC. Should come with latest mapping or allow you to get same from Garmin. If yours is out of date that effectively makes it around £40. Garmin service exchange includes new mapping as well I think.

I did that :blast

Back to Garmin for you mi lad :thumb

You'll probably get a new unit for about £70.00 from them....

:beerjug:

But they are very good :)

Seeing as they come with up to date mapping (pretty sure they do) then that's a real bargain.

Just sold my Quest, a shame but I hadn't used it since I got my SP 2720 over a year ago.

No up to date mapping at that price I'm afraid Bumpkin

But you do get a new or reconditioned unit ... looks brand new, but you're supposed to use the mapping you have with your original unit. They will give you an unlock code for the unit though.

I use my Quest as back up only, or with the UK Topo maps loaded for walking in Wales, Topo maps of Morocco when riding over there, and the World Map when out of Europe. I quite like the Quest :thumb

For my £74 I have just received a reconditioned unit with CSv6 onboard and an email promising the latest mapping on DVD (CN Europe 2009 Deluxe) and an unlock code (the old unit was unlocked to CSv8)

ps Anyone know what the Deluxe bit means?

pps Initially Garmin were unable to supply a Quest and proposed sending me a Zumo 550 as the next logical upgrade!

Latest Maps too detailed for Q1 Processor??

Just a thought about trying new maps in an old Quest.....

I have had my Quest1 for years and my experience regarding map upgrades (I've done 3) has been that as each map release gets more detailed, the unit can't seem to cope with the amount of processing required to make calculations (well, that's how it appears to me at least).

I stopped at CN9 because even with that, the recalc times are so slow if I get off route, by the time it recalc's I am too far away from the last point where it started the recalc, so it starts again and I am stuck in a 'loop of recalculations' so to speak.

These days I plan all my journey's on the PC and download the routes, then use the Quest with recalc turned off.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the unit because with the older maps it still works fine (unless someone here has the latest maps and they are working ok in their Q1. Please let me know if you have succesfully used them).

I just wish they had upgraded the processor, I like the Quest. I'm not bothered about fancy postcode finders, MP3 players and Bluetooth etc (what's wrong with typing an address anyway). I have been all over the place and the Quest has never let me down and never failed to get me to where I wanted to go.

Then again.... maybe a Z660 might be tempting :)

Perhaps you have the Quest II, it was well known for being a bit slow

I was under the impression that CN Europe 2009 had smaller map tiles than it's predecessor and therefore did not suffer from the same slow recalculate rates? Will be disappointed if that is not the case

FWIW I think ST4S has an original Quest

All back from Garmin,
A 'new' (ie different) unit which is labeled 'refurbished' but could be new for all I can tell.

All in 5 days and an upgrade to v8 maps for £55.

Excellent and helpful service :clap full marks

I encountered this problem with my second Quest 1 (I'm on no. 3 now) and the problem was related to an internal (not user-replaceable) battery that had expired. I've had the replacement Quest for a couple of years now and it runs fine with the 2008 mapset. You may want to ask Garmin to check out your unit. If they give you a Zumo in return, that's not a bad swap... :)

I also intend to stick with my Quest until something truly better comes out. The Zumo just doesn't rock my boat: too big to use on a bicycle or hand-held, won't run for a whole day on batteries, takes up too much real estate on the bike. Bigger isn't always better. Enough memory to hold all of Europe would be nice, however!

I managed to kill my first Quest 1 by wiring it back to front...... :drool
However, FleaBay supplied me with another for £40, and i was really careful the second time around. Felt like a tw*t tho.

Great piece of kit, and as good as the TomTom i use in the car.

I'm on Quest #3 using 2008 mapping thanks to a helpful Tosser (it arrived this am - many thanks!) and will be interested to see how well it recalculates using 2009 mapping when the Garmin DVD eventually arrives

I prefer to run it on the internal battery and recharge it overnight from the 5v USB socket on my laptop - this cuts down on the number of mains chargers that have to be carried when away from home

Whoops, sorry to hear that. I presume that you wired a RAM cradle using a car lead but you cut the speaker/cigar lighter bit off and wired up the trailing lead to the bike :nenau

FEK!!! I've just done exactly that. Bastid! Does that mean:

a. my Garmin is now buggered? (It wont switch on so I guess it is)

b. the speaker / ciggy lighter plug that I cut off has a voltage dropper from 12v to 5.5v?

c. The lead / cradle that I spent 2 hours (with help) soldering to the bike will have to come off again?

d. I will have to buy a bike specific lead thingy?

I thank you for your help. :thumb

a. yes
b. yes
c. yes
d. yes

Commiserations. That's a bummer.

Fortunately I read about the 5.5V input before I did the same and ended up simply running my Quest on battery power. Works fine for a whole day of riding and packing the charging cradle/charger isn't a big deal when I'm away for longer.

Garmin are very good about repairing Quests, even out of warranty. I'm on my third under warranty and that one's been fine for two years (grin). Send yours in for repair - you might be pleasantly surprised.

Yes all of the above :(

Sorry to say it but your Quest is now FUBAR.

As Achim says, Garmin will repair. Usually they do a service exchange which gets you a White Box factory refurb Quest along with all the bits, usually a mapping upgrade as well but that's subject to confirmation as ISTR that someone on here didn't get one. Think it costs in the region of £80 which is close to an eBay Quest but the refurbs are as good as new and if you do get a mapping upgrade then it's quite cheap.

You might really 'luck out' and find that their stock of refurbed Quests are exhausted and they upgrade you to a later model, 2720, 2820 or Zumo.

my quest is wired to the battery through a 15a fuse ,and into the motorcycle carrer, unit..

i take it this is 12v , mines not blown:nenau

ugg

Same same here too.......

3 years and still working fine.
