Just bust my Quest withg 12v

knaker quests

Hi guys

Sorry to hijack this thread but looking for a replacement Arial for my quest 1 managed to brake the hinge side of the arial.

Hoping one of you guys with blown units may be interested in helping out with the supply of a replacement Arial.

Spoke to Garmin re repair and was quoted £85.00 for a referb unit with unto date mapping. Unit is running 2008 mapping software and all seems ok very fast re calcs ect.

So will keep fingers crossed on the search for a replacement Arial.

Very impressed with the Quests ability and like the small size which can easily be put in a jacket pocket when of the bike, and used whilst walking and site seeing. Only problem is with no built in Arial it doesn’t work vey well of the bike.

my quest is wired to the battery through a 15a fuse ,and into the motorcycle carrer, unit..

i take it this is 12v , mines not blown:nenau
If it's the Garmin Quest cradle or a RAM mount with QPAC then there is a transformer built into both of these that reduces the voltage to the correct level for the Quest.

What the poor folk on this thread have done is take a cigar lighter adaptor, cut off the speaker unit that plugs into the car cigar lighter socket and wire the cable up to the 12v supply on their bikes. Problem is the lump they've cut off contains a transformer so they're getting the full 12v going into their Quest instead of 5.5v. If they were on a bike with 6v electrics they might just get away with it but it would still be very risky.

If you don't have any luck here Quests quite often come up on eBay sold as 'spares or repair', they tend to go for not very much.

As a 2610 owner who is just about to do a similar thing ( cut of the transformer from the mains power lead and use that ffor the bike) as some of the Quest users above can someone reassure me that mine will be ok.

The 2610 doesnt run on batteries so I am assuming its just a 12V unit with no transformer or if there is its obviously built into the unit itself. :nenau

The 2610, 2720 and 2820 are all 12v in, I think they actually have a transformer, or at the least a voltage stabiliser, built in. So you're OK wiring one of those direct to the bike, make sure you use a fuse, ISTR it's a 1amp.

Just to avoid confusion here; It's not part of the Quest itself, it's integral with the cradle.

Both the Garmin powered Quest cradle and the RAM cradle with QPAC have the transformer.

The RAM cradle on it's own doesn't. You can use a car power lead on a bike so long as you don't butcher it but buy a cigar lighter adapter from Maplin or similar and wire that into the bike.

Thanks for the info folks.
been on the phone to Garmin who are going to replace it with a new one for £65, so thats a result. Might just use the new one on batteries!:thumb2

Good deal (I paid £74) especially as you will get CN Europe 2009 with it

Been running my Quests on internal power/RAM cradle for several years - sure saves on complication. An ACQ 35 gets the audio to your helmet or Autocom

BTW you can charge a Quest from a laptop USB if you happen to travel with one - cuts down on chargers to be carried
