Im uggtek on thumpertalk.pm me there
On yer 1100 / 1150 GS at what speed can you lock up yer back brake if ye stomp on it hard and come to a full stop ?

this is for non ABS bikes or the ABS switched off.

My back brake won't lock up - it isn't powerful enough for that, or is it that my foot won't reach? One or the other.....back brake is CRAP, for anything other than just feathering when you have gone in too hard and too low :Motomartin

Depends on what sized hole you're prepared to rub in the tyre ;)

Mine locks at any speed if you apply it hard enough. Can easily get it sliding.

Yours not working as well as it should mate?

out of the multitude of bikes i have owned i think 3 have had a rear that would be capable of that, best one was a 02 XJR1300

Your rear brake should be able to easily overpower the tyre. But its easier to lock the wheel if you do a sharp stab on it rather than a progessive stop. Your "shocking" the tyre and suddenly breaking its traction. Of course it still rips your tyres to bits :)

Any of them should be able to lock up the rear wheel!

But if the pads are jamming or the sliders stuck then the hydraulic energy is disapated

Mine will easy IF I remember to turn off the ABS

Goo ‘n Ugg….. find out for us… :D the question is do you start at a low speed and build up to find the limit or do you pedal hard and work your speed down to a point where it doesn’t violently slide the rear out and buck your arse into the hedge :augie
Remember.. no picking the bike up until photos have been taken......

I almost found this out yesterday heading home from work.... a truck pulled out in front of me and I didn’t want to be stuck behind him when he turned onto the main road in a few hundred meters…. So I caned it, passed him pulled in realized I’d caned it abit to hard for the rapidly approaching roundabout…. I jumped on the brakes and forgot for a split second that my ABS hadn’t set it self.. this was noticed when the back end pushed up and out to the left a bit with the Metzlers letting out quite a wee puppy yelp…. That was 110-120km/h :augie so a bit less than that i reakon......<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I find the retardation adequate and have not noticed the ABS kicking in apart from when I stop in the offroad stylee without nobbling it, its a decent progressive brake.

looks like some lock up , n some dont very well.

reason i ask is that a major company who sells parts for BMW'S told me the rear brake isnt strong enough to stop the bike without using both front and rear brakes..

a friend can lock up his 1150 GS at 50mph if he slams on the brakes.

not that im into slamming on brakes every wear , i just wanted to know if it was possible?

now i can look further into my fekin crap rear brake:blast

Ah...I thought you were asking 'cos of the bottle factor...ie how fast have you got the bottle to lock it up at! (the back end does tend to try and overtake the front end :D)

My 1150 GSA will lock up quite nicely at over 50 on a dry road (TKC's) but I only enjoy doing it on gravel or the sphincter factor takes over .

mmm surely whats critical is the brake pad.

I use dot 4 (as per the manual).

just read up about 'synthetic' and the only benefit relevent to the GS is that it's long lasting - however they spoil that by insisting that it's changed as per the vehicle manufacturers service interval.

I change my brake fluid every 24 months and can't say I notice any difference in the brakes between the old fluid and the new. in fact the only difference is the colour of the fluid itself.

so whats the point?

Start with the simple......clean yer disc faces off with pure alcohol (boots do it) or brake cleaner

Lots of oily shit on the roads at the moment :thumb2

Might be worth taking the surface of the pads themselves off with a bit of fine sandpaper then trying them back in?

If you've stripped the calipers down 14 times before, might be worth looking at the other potential weakspots....have you got braided pipes?

60 plus

cadence brake it under 'spirited riding'

I'm an ex off road junkie so rear lockups arent a big problem

1150gs BTW

yup goodridge pipes

will rough up pads when i strip caliper.( they could be glazed?)
alcohol is a good idea:thumb2 will get some from work:D

ive bypassed the ABS so its a direct link to caliper.

newish rear master cylinder
pads are only 200 miles if that
disc is ok , no ridges , n clean surface ie its flat

never seen any leakage from the caiper, the sliders wer ok but ill re copperslip em.

good amount of freeplay on brake peddle.

owt else?
