Just passed my IAM test

Well exactly 11 months to the day (1st Dec 2010) since I passed by DAS (5 day process and never been on a bike before ) I've covered 11,500miles and just passed my IAM. Got majority 1's with a few 2's - chuffed to bits.
I know IAM is not everyones cup of tea - but i really enjoyed it and found it dead useful as a new rider.

I know not everybody agrees with IAM etc but you now the basic advanced knowledge so you can apply it to suit you.
I say 'basic' as somebody has already said, you never stop learning.
Remember, there are no 'rules' only 'guidelines' as what you do one time may not apply the next time you are there.

Congratulations, I did my first advanced course early in my biking career and think I learned a great many things that might otherwise have been only learned the hard way.

There's an old saying that in life (or riding) you start with a full bucket of luck and an empty bucket of skills and experience. The trick is to fill one before emptying the other. Sounds like you're off to a good start.

passed my test in August :D
Doing Ride Safe with :rob bill next week (class room bit) then planning to do the IAM when the weather ( :hide ) is better early next year, and when I have got some deacent miles under my belt. :beerjug:

Any one on here from Harrogate IAM?

Well done, I passed mine 12 years ago very similar situation to yourself, I think its kept me alive !!!!
 
Well done mate. I did mine earlier this year and enjoyed it very much. As some say not everyone agrees with the test but I enjoyed learning some good habits instead of all the bad ones driving in London last five years.
 
Nice one Jed - I have a taste for IAM after a BikeSafe course earlier in the year.

I take it you joined the Wokingham branch? Recommended? Might pitch the next time my shifts suit....

Yes it was the one at Wokingham (they meet at St Crispin's), my observer was excellent - couldn't recommend him enough and he's actually a member here - Baz. Overall they guys in the group were very pleasant, plenty of social runs although due to me travelling constantly i didn't have much opportunity to do many of them. There are loads of other courses - Lean Roll, Advanced Braking, Maintenance etc - which are really really good fun.

I have to agree with Tim ... passing the IAM (or RoSPA) should be considered only the start. A basic foundation to build on and take further :thumb

As said ... we never stop learning :)

Well done buddy. I passed mine in 1979 and was a founder member of the Kent group. Although I haven't done anything since, I went out with the cheif observer last month for a riding assessment and although he picked a few little things up, you certainly don't loose it over the years....
 
Well done, good time frame, I bet if all newly qualified riders went for extra training there would be significantly less accidents, it does not really matter if it is the IAM / ROSPA / Independant trainer or just a Bikesafe, they all will improve hazard awareness and remind you of your own mortality, with these both better grasped than just post-test I think most riders get better on their own.

Hoping to get mine done soon, going for 3rd observed ride this weekend and hoping to get the nod to apply for test.
