yup I just hit 10,000 miles which, I'm lead to believe, is just about run in.

A few of you will be shaking your collective heads in despair. A 2010 that's only just done 10,000 miles!!!! In my defense I only bought it 18 months ago and it only had 1,500 miles on it so 8,500 miles in Jersey which is only 40 square miles is not too bad eh. I do 'take it off the rock' twice a year and commute every day on it.

I Hope it stops burning so much oil now...............

I have just fitted a BMW Akrapovic end can and clocked up the 10,000th mile whilst having an afternoon run in the sunshine enjoying the crisp tone of the Akrapovic. I have noticed a rattle as the revs drop back to tick over when I rev it at a standstill. I'm certain there is nothing loose. Can anyone confirm if this is a 'feature' or could it be the flappy valve rattling that I never noticed with the standard can?

Any advice will be gratefully accepted.

Neil

Hi JN....Traded my 2010 GSA in last May with 38K on it, riding down to the dealer thought " how bloody good n smooth is this engine" Then again did pick up a nearly new 90th Anni GSA that day :thumb2

Been said before on here, more miles better they get :clap

My 2010 GS that has nearly 8k on the clock is as smooth as silk compared to the 2 water buckets i had !

How does it know :nenau

What about the little rattle on my new akrapovic? Is this normal? I can't hear it when I'm sat on the bike with my helmet on so perhaps I should get over it.

45000 Miles on my 09 1200GS and its still getting better :D:D

Could be something loose in the can.... swap the old can back to prove it isn't the can.

Oh and I've just picked up an 08 1200GSA with 9600km on it so it isn't run in either!.... for a 2008 FFS

Well done.

10,000 miles in Jersey is pretty impressive. So you have to take the panniers off to get down the lanes?

We had a holiday in Jersey in June to celebrate Jan & my retirements, sadly four days into the holiday we had a call from the care home at 3.00 am to say my Mother-in-law had passed away, so we had to abandon and return home.

We hated the hotel anyway so it was no great loss. When we do a "return match" we'll come back in our camper van :-)

Mega mileages are just chest thumping, miles cost money so just do what suits you.

Enjoy your newly run in bike - I came very close to selling my Triple Black, the dealer had it since Dec 2nd for a commission sale but after some horrendous bills on my old Boxer I changed my mind and collected the bike yesterday. What was I thinking? The ride back was delightful and I need a reliable bike to do the Blood Running, what I don't need is £1,600 of repairs bills on a 23 year old Boxer. I really, REALLY, don't fecking need that. In June, when the GSA is two years old I shall extend the warranty (and keep it extended). BMW's finest can bite hard if you're unlucky.

No its not normal, I have one and no such issues

Cheers MA I generally only put the panniers on the night before I get on the ferry. Sorry to hear about your interrupted trip to Jersey and that the hotel was a bit naff. jersey is like any other place we have some lovely hotels and some pretty dire ones too. If anyone needs any advice on Jersey accommodation I will be happy to give you the low down. I agree about the chest pumping miles but 10,000 is pretty hard core on a bike in Jersey I will have to keep going as I did 18,000 on my VFR before the GS.

NZRalphy. You might be right but I'm just trying to avoid it. It is a subtle rattle rather than a real metallic clanging. Maybe it is just a dodgy rasp:nenau

Mine's running better than ever at 12k, the only rattle I think is "normal" is on start-up, when the engine is cold and this goes away quickly.

Ill share the embarrassment with you... My 09 has only done 7K miles!!!! Only had it a year and it had 3K on it when I bought it...

I have moved forwards a bit with my rattle dilemma. I passed by a mates who has a GSA TC with the same exhaust. He rev'd his abit and compared it to mine. His was deeper and louder. We took the baffle out of mine and it did loose the rattle. Just as we were about to replace the baffle he noticed that his baffle was fitted the other way around ( in back to front). There are two distinct different shapes to it and his had the sort of curly trumpet bit out and mine was the flush way. We put mine in like his and hey presto no rattle. Definitely louder this way as more gasses can escape around it. The factory fitted way (as mine was) is easy to see how the curly trumpet type end would make contact with the inner liing of the exhaust and cause the rattle/vibration at low frequency revs but also block more gases thus being quieter. Anybody else done, send noticed this?????

My mate bought his bike with the baffle fitted like this and we are not sure if this is right or wrong. It fits and the grub screw goes back in fine. I have added a photo rather than a thousand more words. It does look a bit wrong now I look at it...........

After looking at this and doing a bit of googling I feel that this is not right. I have just changed it back. Must let my mate know that the previous owner of his GSA put his baffle in back to front. What this has done is identified the cause of my minor rattle. I have filed a fraction of a mm off the extreme edge of the baffle before refitting it correctly and will see how that sounds. Now I know what it is I'm not particularly bothered as I said before you need to listen for it with helmet off so it won't affect the lovely tone when I'm riding around. I can't be arsed to take it off and return it to the dealer etc.

Great detective work, well done. Thank you for the offer of accomodation data should we return to Jersey. I came within an inch of selling my Adventure, I let my dealer have it for a commission sale (since Dec 2nd) but I retrieved it on Monday as my 23 year old R100R went wrong yet again (Vines were extremely understanding and helpful). I am reducing my fleet as fast as I can but the GSA is now a keeper.

Happy New Year.
