however for the first time i gave me an option of uk and ireland,

the update from pc adviced not enought memory to store more than that on the garmin unit,

can anyone tell me how much can be stored on the unit/sd card,

does this now mean if i go over to franc/germany i will not have the maps on the unit,

and if so do i now have to take a spare sd card with uk and europe on it.

thanks for any help:)

Just load all the maps other than the UK & Ireland onto a SD Card (formatted FAT32) using Mapsource or Maploader.

thanks for that,

i currently have a 2gb card in the unit, do you know how large a sd card the unit can use.

thanks again,

Is your unit a Zumo 550?

If it is then the internal memory is big enough for the latest europe update but you may well have to take off some of the unused files - foreign language voices etc.

yes it it, i guess it would also help to remove routes, do not have photos on it, but there is some music, but i put that on a sd card, will have to look up what is stored on the unit memory and what is stored on the sd card,

i also have previous maps still showing on the unit, can i remove them will it help.

never had this problem before so not sure how to go about it.

really did not want to mess about with different sd cards,

Dont remove the previous preinstalled map - best bet is to ring Garmin support - they will talk you through removing unwanted files and then the whole updated map will fit onto your unit.

Music best stored on sd card separately.

or...................maybe look here .........you may need to register

Hi Paul13,

the update is large enough for your unit if you delete some unnecessary files on your Zumo (after backing up the files ;) of course).
Look into your voice folder and move all the files you don't need onto your hard disk (like German, for example).
Do the same with the files in your text folder
and your MP3 folder
and your routes.

Now there's room enough for all your maps :).

One more piece of advice: put your routes and music on an SD card.

I've successfully loaded the city navigator europe nt onto my zumo 550 by first creating the map on an sd card in the zumo, then copying the 'gmapprom.img' from the zumo as a backup onto my computer then delting it from the zumo and then copying the newly created gmapprom.img that was on the sd card to the zumo using the computer. This was how the garmin support told me how to do it and it works fine.

thanks for all the help, will sort this out over the next few weeks as off to a trip to germany, at the end of may, and want to have all the maps loaded up for then,

to much work at the moment,

right i think all is sorted now,

phoned garmin support this morning, deleted some files from the pc which increase the memory available on the zumo,

was also having problems unlocking maps from my recent upgrade, just not unlocked on the mapsource software when you open the software.

all downloaded now, well pleased,

thanks everyone for your help,

one final question, how do i link routes together,

as a friend has done a route from the uk to germany, and has done it in 4 parts, but i prefer to link them all together, rather than stopping and loading up another route, each stop.

thanks

From memory only....

It is easy but have a small experiment or two first, using copies of the four routes.

Open route one of the four routes.

Go to route properties.

You will see a list of the Start and End points, with all the points in between.

Highlight and cut everything between Start and End.

In a fresh window open route two and go to route properties.

Just beneath Start, paste the data you cut.

You may, depending on how your friend did his plotting, get a message saying 'Consecutive points are not allowed'. This is OK, it is simply that you are trying to route through a single point twice, but without moving.

Click OK

Your PC will now recaluculate the route. It has to as you have changed it.

You should now have route two that is a combination of the old routes one and two.

CHECK THAT IT LOOKS RIGHT!

If it's OK....

Open route three (you can use the now empty route one) and repeat. But this time insert the cut data at the bottom, not the top.

Recalculate....

CHECK THAT IT LOOKS RIGHT!

Repeat as necessary.

Save the final completed joined up route.

Notes:

Play around with it. I learned a lot doing the 80 Virees a moto routes. You cannot break anything.

You can use the same method to slot bits in anywhere.

You can do it the lazy way by simply tracing over the four routes, using Root Tool. Load them all into one file. In route properties, change the base route colour from magenta; it will make it easier to trace over it as you will be able to see where you go. Make sure you trace over it exactly, so zoom in and out.

Long routes take longer to load and definitely longer to recalculate on the GPS device.

right i think all is sorted now,

congratulation :thumb2.

Paul13,

I'd recommend keeping the individual routes, because weird things have been reported about long routes with numerous waypoints like: ZUMO memory failure and other nasty things.

If you'd like to turn them into one master route, at least keep the short ones on your SD card as some kind of insurance against navigation disaster ;).

thanks for all the replies,

the route into and out of germany is split into four parts, and is only about 260 miles from calais, about 20 of us going, and using the drop off system,

i did not know if there was a drop and drag option, i use the route tool more often, and will use that to replan the route if need be,

Bearloe, I have fond memories of Celle, my grandparents lived there, whilst my grandad was in the army, lovely cobbled streets, on the way to their house.:)

Hi Paul13,

I'm glad to hear that.
Is your route taking you through Celle by any chance?
Let me know and we'll get together:D.

Take care
