Has anyone else found that, when installing a K&N Air filter, the slide-in 'clips' that hold the storkel are much 'tighter' to get in than with the standard filter.

I've just installed my K&N and they were very 'tight' - had to resort to using the handle of a screwdriver to push them in!

I took it out to check and all seemed OK, but it does seem strange.

Yes that would be normal when fitting that filter, you can always tell when a GS 1200 has had a K$N filter at one time cause those clips will be battered stupid:eek:

Cheers Steve.

The K&N is the final part of my 'performance' mods (unless I venture down the 'snorkel mod' route) - actually, at this altitude, more likely to get it to match the standard performance at sea level - but without the 'dip' around 5k.

I now have:
- Remus Headers
- Remus Genesis Can (straight through - would not be legal in UK)
- K&N Filter
- Wunderlich Power Controller

I have to say, it's a transformed bike from Standard.

Cheers,

Dave.

Snorkel mod

Just in case you decide otherwise ebay.de item number 320106238164
If you think the k&N is a tight fit try fitting the power snorkel, took me a while on my 12GSA. You have come this far after all.

dlevett can you add a pic of the bike... and how much was the cost in our weak SA rands

Slippy,

Will do - you can't really see much as far as the K&N filter and Power Controller go - the bike looks standatd in these areas.

On the Rand front, I have the advantage of having friends come over from the UK - I tend to buy over there (our UK friends may think 'stuff' is expensive there, but it's more over here) and get people to bring things over for me.

The only thing I dought and got fitted here was the Remus headers and can. I got them fitted by the BMW dealer (in case of any warranty issues - everything else is easily removable).

Cheers.

If you only fit the filter does it make a difference? Or must you go the filter and the snorkel mod?

Slippy,

I'm in the process of 'mod'ing one thing at a time' so that I can see which make a difference and which don't - unfortunately I've been away since fitting the K&N, so have not evaluated that yet.

So far, at this altitude:
- Remus headers and open can = big difference right through the rev range, especially around the 'dip' at 5k (some backfiring introduced on trailing throttle openings).
- Power controller = difference, again noticable around 5k and beyond (I've found the throttle response a bit 'jerky' at low revs, but that is probably a 'get used to it' type thing (back firing seems to have gone).
- K&N = can't tell yet, but I suspect not very noticable (may give more of a difference if/when the Power Controller is set up on a dyno).

If you only fit the filter does it make a difference? Or must you go the filter and the snorkel mod?

More (air) in, more out is the old tuning adage. The filter itself will probably have very little noticible difference, except maybe slightly louder intake sound. You need the freeflow exhaust system to start decerning the performance improvement.

Essentially with these boxer engines (and I did identical mods on my previous 1150) it is the accumulated effect of various mods that add up. The air intake (filter + snorkel) and exhaust (freeflow, no CAT and larger headers) compliment one another ... couple this with a PC for more fuel control where needed and one really starts talking! I have had these identical mods (above) for many months now and would not have it any other way. The bike is not only more powerful but deffinately more rideable (read SMOOTH STRONG POWER DELIVERY) :bounce1 :bounce1 :bounce1 :bounce1

Great stuff

I might start with the filter and the snorkel mod and see.

Thanks
