i think am going to use it as my winter bike whats the score with them, what is going to go wrong with it, what are the bad signs (should i just hide it away and use it when my airhead is sick) what are the prefered winter tyres. cheers Bm

I was going to say to watch the fork seals but it's got K1100/75 forks fitted.

Tyres are a bit limited, I use Metzler Lazer on my K75. They're normal bias-belted stuff, last well, grip okay and cheap.

I prefer that original RT screen to the later, less steeply raked versions. The foil on the top is meant to prevent buffeting and keep the rider's visor clear. It always worked for me but some people found that it didn't, depending on stature.

Those things will easily do 200,000 miles with just oil changes. I met a DR once, back in the early 90's, his 86 bike had 305,000 miles on it. He changed the FD at 150,000 but that was it.

grease the driveshaft splines once a year. You ned only grease the bevel end of the shaft, don't bother with the gearbox end.

Only takes half hour.

The paint job could just be someone's taste and no other reason (same for the black wheels, I don't think they were an option on any K100RT models) but the fork change makes sense.

K100RT's/LT's had no fork brace. The braced fork was only fitted to one K100 model, an SE K100RS. My 88 model RT used to blow seals because the forks flexed under the weight of that fairing when braking. BMW started to use the K75S forks on the 1100 onwards because of the integral brace and because the forks themselves are better. The only thing you need to remember is that if you do any work on the forks, you need to look at the section of a Haynes Manual that covers the K75.

If I had a K100, I'd do the same mod.

With that mod, you have the best of both worlds, an RT with the better front-end and with the fairing where it should be instead of the later 1100 that had it shifted forward a few inches.

.

K100RT's/LT's had no fork brace. .

Yes they did, along with a two piece front mudguard from late 88.

The later (post92) type of K75 front forks are made by showa and are similar to the K1100 but different , and they were never fitted to the K100 and the yolks are also different .

ah thats prob it see what year it is when i get the log book :P all my dad knows about it was before the last owner who did the paint job it was used in the royal cavalcade (whatever its called). any one know what colour is bwm colour code 608 cheers Bm

You could have told him that 608 is Avus black. :bow

Why is it a problem - looking at the picture you've got the later K100 ( from 1988) forks fitted.
not a problem could have been in the future if i tried to put 100 fork seals on or are they the same ?

ah so it just had a few highlights in blue. thought it would be a few more years till i rode an old girl with a blue rince :blast :D

On my K75S I preferred Michelin Macadams to the Metzlers

cheers will bear that in mind :thumb2
horah it passed its Mot no advises but it has got a mark on the system that its been previously pranged.
and first impressions of riding it........................ I hope i dont fall asleep :D

They are K100 fork seals. Full stop. All K100 fork seals are the same whether forkbrace versions or not.
The only different type are the K10016v - and you haven't got one of those.

Has your dad taken leave of his senses? Will this bike make it to the new year without you breaking it?

:aidan:aidan
