Kitty / splitting bills on tours

Group of six usually go on tour twice a year, always have a kitty for food and drink. When it gets low we all chuck in another £50 or whatever, any left over gets held for the next trip.
Fortunately we all drink/eat roughly the same. Works well for us and no arguments.

This is the reason for the question in case someone had a better system as we have one or two of these
We always use a kitty, successfully. Always the same group of 4 to 6 pals, no one takes the piss. It works for us
I would have a quiet word and be prepared to bin them if they continued to take the piss. Fortunately, never had this in over 30 years of arranging trips. Just one case where someone was black balled but that did not involve a quiet word as it was more serious than financial piss taking.
On the other hand, as already mentioned, if there is a consensus to take the hotel's 3 course fixed menu and someone does not want that then that person needs to take responsibility to make their own meal arrangements, which might mean sitting on a different table.

Only once on a trip have I said - no way am I slitting that bill - that was on a Motorrad Trip.

yeah I get it I really do but "Pay Your Own" method?
Absolutely negates any possibility of fall outs over bills!
But of course if someone is running short No one is going to screw them over
A timely question as I have just returned from a week's sailing with 3 old friends.
We split all the bills including food and drink equally, and I am OK to do this as I enjoy their company.
However they each weigh 50% more than me and drink and eat 50%-100% more than me, especially when it get to the spirits. (These things may be related
).
So on occasion I do feel slightly 'over-taxed'...but as someone said, it's only money!

I don't drink, never have a starter and rarely have a pudding so there's no way I'm going down the kitty route.
I meet a couple of friends from time to time for breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake and have been stung more times than I care to remember so made it clear some time ago that we each pay our own way these days.
I usually travel on my own these days but have a bloke coming to Ireland with me in September, I'll make it clear to him that we're each paying our own way before we set off.

So @grantmac you travel in very small groupsSame here… I just invite cnuts who I tolerate and who tolerate me….
When I was running the wanders, I collected a kitty for coffee stops. From memory, it was EUR 20 a head, topped up if necessary. On coming home from the jaunt(s), I put any left over money into a jar. At the end of the year, I tipped the jar out and gave the sum to a local charity.
There’s always one fecker that wants a Tiramisu! 
For the times I travel with others, we adopted Splid (one of the many apps).
Works wonders.
This April I went to Spain with a large group of people I knew (unusual for me) and it worked fairly well.
Everyone pays for their own fuel and crap usually, but the hotels and some meals where paid randomly sometimes (speed of checkout) by one individual.
Since I booked most of the hotels for the first wew days, at some point one of the hotels alone billed almost a couple of grand on my card.
Slowly recovered that over the trip (cost of some meals and other hotels) and at the end of the trip the balances across each other were small.
I was against this method at the beginning, but have to admit it works well.

The allocation of expenses incurred and debts due, via an app does work well. But the app does require that everyone buys into the app and nobody takes the piss. The latter applies to more than just expenses of course. ‘Good tourists’ are good tourists, whilst bad ones can simply be excluded from future trips.
We went on a trip to Le Mans and included within our party, a friend who had fallen on hard times. We divided up his expenses between us, effectively giving him the holiday for very little or nothing.
Why?
A number of reasons:
We have all known him for years.
He’s a ‘good tourist’ and bloody funny, with some truly outrageous stories, all delivered in an excellent style.
He’d been on several Le Mans trips with us before and always paid his way.
We had a spare place in a car, so him occupying an empty seat, cost ‘nothing’.
But for the grace of God, it could have been any of us in his shoes.
Similarly, we have an understanding amongst us that peoples’ lives can change, sometimes dramatically, between when a trip is arranged (multiple tickets bought, accommodation booked and pre-paid) especially when the arrangements are made maybe half a year or more in advance. If someone has to drop out (even last minute) or has to have an arrival and / or departure time different to the rest of the tour party, then so be it. We can all work around most things, as that is what friends do.

he’s, witnessed that once at my local Chinese in Chinatown, The Hague. Didn’t get very far and got a good hiding to boot. And still had to pay with a nice black eye and other painful ailments to boot … 2 to 4. They all know I’m a twat so no airs and graces required. It’s the Pomposity Averse Riding Club (PARC) ….
Down to earth enjoy the ride, the food , the accomodation. The accomodation surprise always reminds me of Gone Fishing. It’s always part of the trip.
You don’t need to.
Get one bill and everyone be honest and pay the amount they’ve used.
If they insist on one payment, tell them that you’ve agreed to pay, if they won’t accept, fine, walk.
