KTM 990 Adventure - Should I?

You know what Dave, you're a b@stard :thumb

I bought my 05 GS new, as a keeper and up until now I have never, once, considered getting rid of it for anything else.

However, having seen the gorgeous Dakar of Betty Swollocks up for sale and following this thread I'm thinking more and more how I'd like one of these bikes.

I want to get a test ride...........but...............I just know what will happen if I do.........................

B@astard :D

must admit, i was rather taken with that bike too :)

Chain to clean ... Silly twin tank that will soon frustrate you ... 100 miles only comfort seat.

What's there to like? :nenau

funny

Funny how its always the people that have never ridden one are real experts on the bike......ride one,own one, then tell me its shite.....GSs are good they get you there,Katooms are better they get you there with a big grin on your face.

Three days at work to go :D Picking the bike up on thursday morning, thursday afternoon adding my various bits and bobs, North/Mid Wales on friday for a run round and camping in the Lakes for the weekend. You may have already guessed but I'm really looking forward to this :thumb

Happened to me I'm afraid, Got a 54 GS12 as a keeper, went into to look see at riders sat on a GS800 and saw the orange beastie in the corner, next thing was enter your pin please sir :blast :blast :D
2 years and 18K later :bounce1:bounce1 still loving it, and still look at it every night B4 I lock the garage :toungincheek

I'm soooo considering a 990 Adv. I'll keep the SE for 2 up touring but have a real hankering for a Katoom... May arrange for a test ride soon:augie:D

Try an SM-T before you purchase

Just had the loan of an Adv while my SM-T was getting warranty work done (water in the clocks) and its a good bike BUT the SM-T has better suspension, brakes, I find it more comfortable and its way more fun to ride.
I was seriously considering the new blue Adv but its not half the bike the SM-T is. I'll be keeping mine :rob

If you could only have the one bike, i.e. you didn't have the GSA in the garage too, which KTM would you have an SM-T or a 990ADV ?

Got both, 990ADV (2009) and a 1150GSA (2003).

Gs gets 50mpg all day
ktm gets 35 - 45 mpg depending on how I ride it.

GS - Great tourer, two up - pan continental
Ktm - Good tourer, tank range (160 miles to light) would do my head in on long journeys

Gs - Is like a family car
Ktm - is like a sports car (i.e. both get from AtoB but they have different outlooks on life)

my 2p

Dollyrocket,

This is the most balanced & objective comparison of a GS & a 990 I have ever read. Thx !

I am getting so tempted by a 990 Adv R....

Mike.

my gs1200 would get 180miles before the fuel warning came on, my 990 gets 150 miles before the light comes on with 1/4 of the tank left.... not too much difference to be annoying.

the seat is very hard and needs rework or an airhawk.

suspension as standard is set quite soft, few tweeks or set it to sport and its soooo much better.

also have to remember its a shock to have fork dive after owning a GS
