KTM 990 Adventure - Should I?

remember the new R has lower suspension compared to last year.. they quietly swapped it.

According to the KTM website the Adventure R is still higher than the Adventure so is it just lower than previous Adventure R models :nenau

Ok sorry for the delay folks. here goes.... So I caught the train yesterday to Colwyn Bay and was at the shop for 9am, All was well and I headed off for home via the A5 rather than the tedious A55. Had a nice run but kept trying to change gear with the back brake as I've been using my Triumph while I've been waiting. I was surprised by the seat which is much more comfortable than I'd been led to believe but I really just wanted to get home and get the spanners out. GPS, Autocom, Scotoiler and power for heated jackets to fit/ wire up. I like to get my new bikes kitted out as I like them from day one.

It was a mission and a half as there is no spare space anywhere to fit my fusebox, eventually I plumbed for behind the headstock. I fitted a fusebox so I can keep my accessories separate to the original wiring and I trip the feed to the fusebox with a relay so when the bike is off the accessories are off too. I didn't get finished yesterday so spent this morning finishing the wiring and fitting the Scotoiler, all was almost done at midday but then I dropped a screw and ended up taking both tanks off to find the jigger!! The suspension was a bit soggy yesterday so I set the whole lot to 'sport' before going in to get my bike gear on. It was 2 pm before I ended up getting out.

So eventually I get to ride my new bike, the right foot gear change was now no more than a faint memory as I headed from Nantwich to Whitchurch a road I know very well, I stopped for juice at Whitchurch then headed off towards via Ellesmere, to Newtown and the start of one of my favourite roads. the A483 to Crossgates. I stopped for a brew at the Crossgates cafe and reflected on the first proper 100 miles on the KTM. It certainly handles better than the GSA however, the GSA didn't handle as well as my previous GS but I still think the KTM has the edge especially after firming things up, it needs a bit of fine tuning but it's pretty good. It's comfortable too not as good as the GS/GSA but not far off and I certainly don't need to change the seat. Oh and the back brake works, neither my GS or GSA had a back brake that did any more than dragging your feet on the floor! Neither of my 1200s had ABS so both had independent and useless rear brakes. The KTM doesn't create any buffeting and I would say that wind noise is on a per with a standard GS. I'm saving the best until last that engine!!! What a stonker and I'm sure it will only get better with some miles.

Tomorrow Blondie and I are off to get a few more miles done loaded up with our camping gear and finishing off with a night in hotel Hilleberg.

To sum the GSA will certainly be better if you need to do a 600 mile motorway day but other than that I think the KTM beats it and for me that's good enough. I'm one very happy customer :D

some tips for you.....

get some clear vinyl and stick it on the panels behind the tank bag straps before the laquer is ruined.

you can get a clear protection kit from crispy designs for about £150 which covers all the panels, if you are going to do it , do it now when the bike is new.

the rear pannier rack will be rubbing on the number plate support so space it out.

the clamps for the crash bars on the frame will rub through and will cut in on the first off road tumble so take them off and use a piece of HD inner tube on the area. CAREFUL ON THE LH SIDE watch you dont cut through the wiring loom when you put the clamp on.

aftermarket small fuse boxes will fit next to the original one.

pop a bit of silicone grease around the starter realy on the RH side bash plate cover as they can get wrecked over time.

the "jump start" +ve post is behind the RH cover also, it has a red rubber cover, this splits and falls off.

im surprised you say the buffeting is about the same as a GS I find it far worse

do UK bikes come with that front reflector?

spare seat cover is about £25 and if it rains you will have a wet arse for the rest of the day as the cover absorbs water :(

have a look at getting a second fan if the engine temp bothers you

the KTM chain lube gets thrown everywhere and it a PITA to clean off. HG do a can of "profi dry lube" - its great!
 
The SMT is an awsome bike

Very nice. Sat on one just after it was launched, the weight & riding position felt just right, had to walk away before the c'card came out . Looked around for a nice used one last year but all still above my budget. Would definitely be my next adv' style bike if I wasn't too bothered about luggage.:thumb
 
The Scottoiler on my 07 990 is a vacuum type and takes its feed from the blanking plug on the right hand side rear cylinder,i have the KTM one it has the adaptor in the kit,take out the blank screw in the union...simples i would imagine the standard scottoiler kit comes with various unions also......

Is the Scottoiler a vacuum model and where did you plumb it into ??

Yes vacuum type and as Cherokee says from the rear cylinder inlet.

Gentlemen the GPS on my bike is a Garmin 278 far superior to the dumbed down Zumo and I won't be changing it until it packs in :thumb

I'm going to get rid of the long tank bag straps and just run it under the seat to stop any potential rubbing and to tidy the job up.

The inner tube idea will be taken up and I spotted the close proximity of that bit of wiring when I re-fitted the crash bars, I an certain that that must have caught a few folks out.....

I'd already fitted the fuse box, it's tucked in right behind the headstock. A tight fit but I wanted to keep the cubby hole free.

Will do with the relay. The rubber round the jump start terminal does look a bit suspect, I see another use for a further bit of old inner tube and a zip tie :)

Buffeting is none existent on the KTM, you are more in the wind but the blast is constant.

It poured down yesterday so I discovered for myself that the seat cover is porous, naff idea....

Yes the front reflector is standard.

I fitted a Scotoiler so hopefully won't have to worry too much about chain lube.

Well we've now done just short of 400 miles two up with our camping gear and I'm still happy :thumb As I said before it isn't as good as my GSA was on the motorway but on all other roads it suits me better. Over the last couple of days we've ridden in all sorts of weather from bright sunlight to torrential rain and roads types from the motorway to the Hardknott pass and everything in between. Further to my ramblings after my first proper ride on friday I've a couple more positives and a couple of negatives to add. I'll start with the negatives; twin fuel caps, I see the point and it does result in a slim bike but what a pita especially with a tank bag. The front brakes need loads of lever pressure, they haul you up but you do need to tug pretty hard and they lag slightly in the wet. I think a change of pads might help especially with the wet lag so some EBC double H's will be finding their way in there, that is unless you guys know better? Now the positives; nobody told me about Pirelli Scorpions, the wet grip is nothing short of amazing, they're pretty soft so I don't expect to get too many miles out of them but they are excellent. I had WP suspension on my FS650 'Berg so I know how good it is but the ride quality over some of the Dales and Lakes small undulating roads was great, even Blondie noticed from her pillion perch and made comment. The gearbox is also a joy to use oh and I did mention that engine didn't I :D

I read this just in time, about to order a 990 ADV and some of the little tips of stuff to do to a new bike may save me some hassle in the future. :thumb

I'd be interested in the service costs, by PM if you are happy with that ? It may save me money to travel further afield to get it done. Cheers

Front brakes are good, just get used to them. (i only noticed them really when going into downhill hairpins in the Pyrennes, compared to my old servo GS12 that is) Still on oe pads (brembo) and still only half worn 18K.
If you always use the tank bag, its much better than the normal one filler cap I can assure you, as you can leave it on when filling never thought of it s a PITA though :nenau
Scorps last about 4K ish one up may be a little less if always two up, the usual 2 rears one front combo. If staying on tarmac Conti Trail attacks are superb
I use a touratwat screen spoiler, wunderlech do a new adjustable one now for about £80.
It will only get better and you will always be grinning, :bounce1:bounce1:thumb2
