KTM 990 SMT ...

Just to add....

The thing is I so wanted the SMT to be brilliant-and it may well be in some eyes and when actually ridden.

But to me,some of the signs aren't that promising.

When I went to the Milan show a few weeks back, the KTM stand was the first I headed for,and then SMT the first bike.

And when I saw it my immediate thought was ,'what the hell is that ?'.

To me,it looks like a cross between a maxi scooter and something that got too close to the fire.

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20081206-khrwdxyi4seqrcgj68jed9pnab.jpg" alt="PB060013"/>

But I realise taste is subjective, and some will love the looks,as already proven here.

But a few other things don't quite add up.

All KTM have done is take the standard SM,stick on a screen and comfier seat, put some cheaper tyres on it and slap some guards on the exhausts to take luggage, which was suspiciously absent.

The first thing most of us do is have a good poke around, opening and closing panniers etc.

So where were they ?

I asked the KTM guy on the stand and he just shrugged his shoulders.

My guess is that they aren't actually ready for production-hopefully because KTM are sourcing some that are more weatherproof than the ones for the standard SM.

And ,as the bike isn't exactly a looker, why couldn't KTM give it a bigger tank and a decent range ?

OK,if you ride carefully, you may see 150 miles ,but 130 is more normal.

My mate took his SM 990 to Spain and back and that was the usual figure.

It's also disappointing -to me,anyway, being a big KTM fan-that KTM haven't altered the FI since 08.

OK,others have said that the FI is better than in 06.

That is true, but the FI on my 07 SD was not brilliant.

It was only marginally better with a full Akra system and professional setup with PCIII and dyno time.

My mate who took his 08 SM 990 to Spain hates the FI,and he has had as many KTMs as me and loves them.

I've ridden his bike more than once and it is no better than my 07 SD was-infact I think it is worse.

I specifically made a point of asking the question in Milan if there were any changes to the FI in 09 and was told categorically that there were not.

Somebody made the point above that you get used to the FI on KTMs.

Whilst I see where he is coming from,I don't think it's quite true.

I don't think you get used to it,more that you accept it and sub-consciously work around it.

KTMS do have a very abrupt pick up,which does take time to adjust to,but that's not the same as snatchy injection, which is something different entirely.

It's only when you ride another bike with great FI that you realise how far off the mark KTM still are.

That's why a number of mates have gone back to the carbed 950 motor, and also why I have a 950 SE over any of the 990 models.

I'm sure this bike will sell well, but if they had made a good looking bike, with a 200 mile range, fully sorted FI and waterproof luggage,it would have been so much better.

KTM are treading water and need to start swimming again.

Apart from better looking and EFI they have already done that, it's called an Adventure.

The way I see it KTM have trod a very fine line between making the SM a wee bit more practicle whilst trying not to loose what has made the SM such a good bike.

For me they have pretty much suceeded. It would seem to still be capabale of getting me into trouble, be just about up to doing serious miles and very up to being an every day bike - like I said earlier, ticks pretty much all my boxes.

'course all of this is just speculation bollox, a test ride is what is needed :thumb2

KTM are treading water , they need to give the SMT the front end of the new Duke and they need to launch a 690 Adventure.

Sorted :thumb

Absofeckkinlutely. After all ,we've so far only sat on the thing.:thumb2

Wenty to the NEC today and did not like the SMT !! The SMR is a real Beauty but having just sold mt 990SM because of the Shite fueling I wont be forming an orderley Queue!!!! There is no intention to change the EFI Mapping so unless you ride it like a cnut all the time it will get on your tits after a thousand miles as mine did. They sre working on it but wait till 2010 when the mapping will have been sorted. At the mo slighley wet roads and miniroundabouts will have you off unlress you cover the back brake and feather the clutch, something I never had to do on my old 950SM.The Guy on the KTM stand knew what I was saying but they have just about got the adventure EFI right and that cost 100000 Euros!!to do:eek:

Thats disappointing. I thought they had sorted it because of a test I read in the latest MSL mag. Maybe they haven't .:(

In MSL they took a 12GS, a 990 Adv and a Tiger. Overall the Adv was the preferred bike that the testers enjoyed most and found the easiest to get on with . They never once mentioned poor fuelling, describing the engine as 'crisp and responsive' and also commented on the fact that the engine was very tractable , not suffering badly from the usual vtwin snatchiness at low revs. The test was using 3 riders, over a long weekend on unfamiliar roads predominantly in the wet and the Adv was described as hugely confidence inspiring.

Is this FI problem worse in some models than others. OR is it possible to get a gud un or a bad un which is a far worse situation because it makes buying one a bit of a lottery unless you buy used ( which I would be) and get a bloody good test ride before you buy?:nenau

Test Road one for 400 miles before i bought mine but that was in the summer!! Thought it was the only bike I needed but day in day out I was wrong Great when ridden hard all the time gets on yer tits as a day to day as a GS never does:mad:

:potkettle Four years younger than your good self :D

Doesn't look like leisure trail will be getting a demo 990 SMT :(Had bike serviced there today great dealer nice set up :clap
They aren't out until the New Year so it would have been surprising if they had one today.

It will also be surprising if they don't get one. KTM persuade their dealers to hold stocks of all their bikes. Mostly this is a pain for the dealer and needs careful management between ones kept showroom fresh and ones for demos/loan bikes but I can't see them not getting an SMT - you would think it would be an obvious demo bike...

I asked on the KTM stand at the NEC. I was told that the SMT demo bikes will be at the dealers "end of February - March at the earliest".

FWIW, I think the SMT is drop-dead gorgeous!!! Maybe that's the problem, after the GS, ANYTHING is gorgeous!!! :augie

He won't be biting as he is lying in the sun in St Lucia.

And watching 6 Canadian models who just happen to be here on a topless photo shoot all week.
