Sold my 1200GSA cant afford a new one, so thought about an 800GS. My mate has however tempted me with his KTM 990. Its a 2007, has £1200 worth of extras, done 490 miles. The bike looks fantastic, but being almost 9 months old I will only get one summer trip out of it under guarantee. The local dealer up here I dont get on with. The bikes up for £7500, seems the right price, but I,m not up on depreciation rates or second hand market. Also I,ve heard a few adverse comments on servicing costs and fuel range. Any one help, or is an 800 a better bet with 2 years cover--BM cover in Europe is superb. Bikes seem so simlar. Confused!

Big thing in mcn yesterday about 14% price hike on ktm's next month due to euro/£. They say 2nd hand prices should rise aswell.
I would try it on Parkers / search MCN and Biketrader which you can do on year to confirm its a good price, also factor in we are still on the way down, could be upto a year befroe things bottom out

Fuel range-120-140 to light but some get 180 on a full tank but the pleasure of riding the KTM far out does the fuel range / costs for me.

Service cost-Has the first one been done?

Stand back and stare at both bikes.:D

Ride the feckers.

First service on my 990 Supermoto was £220 and that has no body work to remove, some people have even paid £350 at some dealers for the Supermoto so the ADV is gonna probably be a bit more to service. The first service is a big one with Valve check.

If you're worried about the warranty, see if he or you can extend it.

Buying new you can extend it one year for about £150 or two years for about £300. I'm sure you can extend it at any time for the same deal.

Was the bike registered in 2007? If it was that is low mileage! KTM warranty is normally 24 months from first registration and transferable.

Cheers

How much

Yes, the bike was registered in 2007, its a minter, my heart says go for it, but a bit nervous of a trip to the Ukrainre on it. The leg from Amsterdam to Warsaw will be a hard motorway spank before the real holiday begins.

Thanks

If you rode it, like it, didnt have any objection to the EFI (seems to be a big variation in experience with this - due to rider or bike), then the price is pretty good. Nail it.
What are the extras?

What makes you nervous?

KTM990

Mooky,

Thanks for the reply.
The bike has Touratech screen extender, GPS mount and a seat,
Throttle cam--gives alittle slack?
Crash bars
Some carbon fibre protectors
big foot side stand extender
center stand?--not sure if thats an extra
Fitted top box
Heated grips--not ktm

Bit nervous of break down and not sure of how good on the fast motorway section, is it stable between 95-115mph. BMW has a great european network for recovery. Our group has used it only once on all of the trips, took the bike from hotel at night, and it was their next morning to continue. In all the mileages on trips we have done,1 battery failure, and 1 puncture, no mechanical faults at all. I just fancied a change, but imagine the stick I would get if the only non Bm broke down. The dealer coverage doesnt look too good, so it may take some time for them to assist.I do have a Honda Varedero, I could do it on that,. regardless if I bought the KTM. I suppose its just a confidence thing, but I dont know anyone with a KTM or anyone who has done a long trip on one, but obviously there are lots.

Thanks
Bill

Well, I guess you wont know if you dont give it a go. :D

Of the extras, none are big-cost items I would get excited about. Top-box isnt that cheap I guess... (and not many 2nd hand) so if thats useful to you, its worth something.

Well, not having owned or even ridden a GS, I cant give you much by way of comparison. There is unlikely to be any KTM elves that are going to take it during the night, fix it and return it in the morning (how much does that cost by the way??).
On the flip side, you can pop a problem on Orange Crush (advrider) or even ktmforum.co.uk and get an answer within minutes or single-digit hours. Some very knowledgeable & helpful ppl on those forums. Ppl will go miles out of their way to help a fellow advrider.
I have a 950 - somewhat lower tech than an EFI 990, and I am confident I can take that thing well off the beaten track, and if I have a problem I can fix it myself.
Is it going to break down? Unlikely. As likely as any other bike IMO. There are guys who have done near 100k miles and motor still going strong.
There are some things you can check over yourself - some usual-suspect spares to carry (e.g. levers). Ultimately, pre-trip preparation & bike maintenance is your responsibility. This includes the responsibility to check the bike over yourself - not rely on a dealer. A responsibility you may not want.

Is it stable over 95mph - er, yes. Is it pleasant at that speed? You might find it a bit windy - depending on your height and a bunch of other factors, you get some buffetting. From what I have read, you get that with the stock GS screen too?

You might find that the GS is the preferable mile-munching bike - at least thats what a lot of ex-GS KTM owners say. But I avoid that kind of riding... so I dunno.

My only advice regarding you having the only non-KTM amongst your mates is .... ****em !
Ride the bike thats fun - whichever it is.

how much

Thanks Mooky,
I think I,ll ride it this weekend. After this springs trip I wont be motorway blasting, it'll be B roads, and A roads. I'll be camping with it, so it'll have to take a lot lashed onto the back. Yearly trips will be the same with a few trails thrown in. I think it will be down to the mystical EFI I've so negatives about--seems down to the individual bike. If I take it I'll look for a set of KTM panniers and rails.

Back to the GS, the night fairies are free for 2 years, only the tyre to pay foror any consumeables---a good sevice.

Thanks for the advice Mooky, if I get it I might be asking some questions!

Wow, thats pretty good. I guess its no wonder theyre so much more.

Well, the key thing to remember is that if the EFI doesnt grab you, there is always the 950. They are identical but for EFI instead of carbs - and minor hp diff. The later bikes have a few up-rated parts compared to the early 950's ... but thats it
There are low-miles 950's to be had - and I wouldnt necessarily be worried about ones with 20K+ either.

Given a choice between a 990 and 950 - same price, I would chose 950. But thats my preference for simplicity and something I can control myself and fix myself in an out-of-the-way place
