I am looking for a KTM Rally 450. New may be just a little out of my reach, so hoping to pick up 2nd hand hopefully. Anyone out there know anything or anyone. I have a DREAM of participating in the 2013 DAKAR.

Aren't they only just out?
I know two guys who have just been in the Dakar, Jago & Toby. They may be willing to sell their bike (although I personally probably wouldnt)

Their bikes were 525's modded by Desert Rose to 450 to meet the reg's.
The KTM 450 rally is still very new. 36,000 Euros new IIRC
Lovely bikes though.- but some riders in the Dakar 2012 (4 I believe) think there is a design flaw in the bash plate - there are holes cut in it just in front of the exhaust pipe and debris / dried grass etc. got in, got hot and then caught fire. 4 bikes melted to nothing
Just think how you would feel

..as for the Desert Rose bikes from Dakar 2012, unlikely Toby would sell his after what he went through with it and as for Jago P, he is now doing some travelling - the fate of his 450 I don't know? Anyone heard?

Yes, I realize that it is very early to be hunting for a bike when those who have them only just got them. But you never know. Putting out as many feelers as I can to be in the right place at the right time. 
Hope I am not coming across as some hopefull vulture, but rather as a desperate wannabe Dakar competitor in the future. I dream of that start line

Dude ... if you don't know already, KTM Cape Town builds something similar, although a 690, I am sure they can build you a 450 !!

Have thought about this, starting to look like the only option for me, but may also be the cheaper one too.
Mate of mine is doing it on a 450 Honda , standard 450 plus £11000 Dakar kit from Honda , he reckons its the Dogs

have you checked the dakar forum, there was one for 22k euros with some spare wheels and other spares. It was located in paris.

So did you find one, a friend just bought one off a dakar rider this year, it was immaculate hard to believe it had done the race mine was a bit worse for wear cosmetically.

Thanks All - Finally have my new bike (450 RR) and I am stoked. Very glad that I waited and got what I ultimately wanted. After a first long outride, I can now understand why these bikes are the world's best rally bike.

You wouldn't dream of using a 4x4 in southern Africa without a gauze over the radiator for just the same reason... but it's the owner who does the mod, the manufacturer can't know whet environment you'll use the bike in and it only takes a bit of common sense...
Good luck to the riders taking a claim to Honda!

But if the manufacturer wrapped the exhaust, on the off chance that you'd encounter dry grass seeds, 90% of owners would find it pointless and just junk it.
