Doing a little tour of Wales next week.

3 days, 2 sleeps out.

Anyone use Kurviger or similar? I have used Calimoto before but apparently it's no longer free. Kurviger offers 7 days free trial.

Any views?

Cheers.

Looks like I'm going to be using the Tom Tom go ride app on the iPhone.

Set to "super thrilling" I guess?

As daft is this sounds get the KTM connected app which is free and it has a free nav app with it - I have the paid version which is excellent for what it is but the free one comes with a months trial of the paid so you can upload GPX to it etc

If I read your posts correctly, you are looking for:

A. An app that is free to use.

B. The free app needs to work on an iPhone.

C. The app needs to generate routes between A and B, for you to follow.

Is that correct?

If so, I think the following might work:

1. Use any free to use app you can find that will create you the A to B routes you want to ride AND will allow the exporting of GPX files.

2. Create (or have the app create it for you) the A to B route.

3. Export the A to B GPX file to something like GPX viewer 2, which works on iPhones.

Save yourself all that hassle and download Pocket Earth. It costs pennies and for that you get contours and Wikipedia data. No internet connection required ‘cept when downloading maps or creating/amending routes

A good suggestion but I don’t think Pocket Earth’s algorithms will generate ‘twisty’ routes, which (I think) the OP is after. He’ll have to create them manually.

I take your point. PE however has that excellent facility known as ‘rubber banding’. Just drag the first suggested purple line around on your phone (but easier on an iPad) and it is just moments before you have a curvaceous route even Diana Dors would crave from the grave. It is also a lot of fun, and a voyage of discovery, to utilise Google Streetview and ViaMichelin’s green routes while one is at it …

Old Sophia is still going at 89. Jane Mansfield died in a car crash at 34. Both stunning looking women in the 1960's. Anyhow...tried Kurviger for routes but decided I like doing my own research and creating a suitable route from that......control freak me :D

Kurviger is useful for giving an idea of a route A to B, especially as you can subdivide it into sections. For example, for an A to B route, from Calais to Marseille, you could ask the app to split Calais to Cambrai using the motorway, then Canbrai to Dijon on non-motorway roads but reasonably directly. Then Dijon to Marseille along super-twisty awesome roads.

But, Kurviger is not without its faults. Not least, when creating super-twisty awesome routes, it sometimes takes rediculous detours, just to put a ‘bend’ into the direction of travel. These would become very tedious, if the rider just followed the route blindly. To avoid or reduce this problem, load the Kurviger route into MyRoute and check it carefully. At the same time, ask MyRoute to display the route in Michelin maps, which are sometimes easier to look at. Then fine tune the route to suit.

Of course it’s possible to just look at a paper map and create the route that way, too. But, the internet has made the help yourself to help yourself tools available, so I think I might as well use them.

What did you use in the end?

Can't remember it was that long ago! Lol.

No think we did the Callimoto thing then cancelled afterward.

But it did the weird twisty route thing where it takes you through farm yards etc. Apparently "avoid motorways" is the better option rather than the twisty ones.
