Can anyone help with a nice B+B near to La Rochelle, not in the town but somewhere nearby. Travelling down at the end of May.

Can't help you directly, but contact the Tourist Office. I know it may sound a bit lame, but they were brilliant with us last year, finding us another local campsite at short notice, after the one we booked with reckoned they'd never heard of us when we turned up. 
I'm sure you could get their number on the internet somewhere.
It will be busy at that time of year, so book your B&B well in advance.

Not lame at all. That is exactly what they are there for.... to help visitors to the town / area. More often than not they are very helpful
