I was studying the 1:50,000 OS map the other day and there are loads of unsurfaced roads shown going around and about the Lammermuirs. There was mention here a wee while ago of the road between Longyester and Carfraemill which is only one of these interesting looking byways. Can anyone give any specific advice, locked gates, unfriendly shepherds, grouse shooting hazards etc?

The main track from Gifford (via Longyester) - Carfraemill has a sign at each end saying 'unsuitable for motors' suggesting its still a public road. there are (or weren't)any locked gates on it and I've met a few trail bikes on it (whilst mountainbiking) who claimed to have never had any hastle despite meeting fermers etc. The other tracks have various locked gates and even a few signs saying 'no mountain biking' (durr..) A friend of mine once took his Triumph bonnie along one of these and got chased by the farmer and ended up heading across a heather moor until he could rejoin the road - not reccomended!

A mate of mine used to know a guy who wrote for TBM and lived local - he claimed there were numerous tracks in East Lothian and the eastern borders that were rideable but I never found out which ones dammit!

As usual on this subject no definitive answer....

Phil, thanks for that. There are certainly dozens of tracks marked on the 1:50000 OS Map in SE Scotland generally, lots of which look as though they would be fun to ride the GS on. As to mountain biking I think those signs will date from before the Land Reform Act and associated Code which guarantees access for walkers and cyclists so long as they don't interfere with farming and the like.

Lammermuirs!!

Most of the roads in the Oldhamstocks, Moneynut and Brunt area are on or through my neighbours farms! They are all nice but watch out after a lot of rain, those fords can be real terrors!! (these are all metalled roads though)

There are some great roads just over the 'border' into Berwickshire especially around Coldingham and Ayton!:thumb
