The lane recognition function whereby the screen splits and shows a photo of the junction on one side of the screen and lines in correct lane in the other side of screen are very random and rarely appear.

This is an automatic (heavily advertised) feature but only pops up when the set feels like it.

Just got back from a 5 day trip to the west country and can recall it appearing once in the whole trip.
There were times when this would have been really helpful but did not show up ??
I have ridden to the Alps with similar lack of lane recognition

Anyone else have similar experience.

The set also randomly takes me off main roads down minor lanes then back onto the same main road a mile or so further up, with "faster time" setting ?? :nenau

Garmins coverage of lane asist is not a complete package as yet, i believe its an ongoing project and will get better with time. With reference to the routing you will sometimes get spurious anomolies that take you the wrong way, i have had this even when i have made a route, and plotted it to the last detail, Garmins are good but not perfect there are so many variables that can add up to it giving you false info.

Leedude03 is spot on in his reply. If the minor lanes are the same speed limit (irrespective that you can't actually ride them as fast as the main road) but say a few yards shorter and therefore - on paper at least - quicker, then the device might well route you that way. You sometimes see it in towns, where the device will suggest that cutting a corner is quickest when it's obviously not. Just ignore the device's suggestion and all should be well.

MY unit seems to only show a split screen for lane assist on motorway junctions.......... I've never notice it cut in on other roads.

Is this the same for other 590 users ?

Thanks for the replies,

Gargy motorways only!!

Leeddude03 and Wapping yup I hear what your saying, I thought lane assist has been around for some time (maybe not on the Zumo but on Nuvi devices) that I expect it to happen more often than it actually does.
It's so rare that it's quite exciting when it does, like its almost teasing me :D

I tend to use the next junction direction arrows in the top left hand side of the screen, they are fairly small and difficult so see/make out with my eyesight,
