Unless you have some unusual needs, almost any laptop will be fast enough (in processor terms), will have enough memory (RAM) and adequate disk capacity.

Most laptops will have a DVD drive (can read DVDs). Do you want to also write them? It's best to have a multi-format drive that can handle DVD+RW as well as DVD-RW and other formats.

The biggest decision for me is always the size and resolution of the screen.

If you want to take the laptop travelling (aka 'Road Warrior' use) you will probably want smallish and light weight, so something like a 14-in or smaller screen. If you are mainly using the device at home or work (aka 'Corridor Cruiser') you might want a big 17-in screen.

Even the same size screen comes in different resolutions. The bigger the pixel count, the more you get on the screen. My 15.4-in laptop is old and heavy, but it has 1920 x 1200 resolution which is massive.

Laptops are inherently less reliable products than desktops, so it makes sense to go for a brand with good reputation for reliability and support. Acer is a good brand. Personally I normally buy HP or Dell.

I spoke to the engineers from the IT company we use at work about a laptop.
They all recommend getting the extended warranty on any machine you buy.
Laptops are renown for being unreliable.

Of course now we will get folk posting to say their laptop is 400 years old and still working perfectly. :D

edit: as Tim said in his last line :blast

FWIW I have just bought a new lap top - I was looking at one of these but was told by the salesman to go for a Pentium Dual Core as it was better suited to photo manipulation/video editing (which is what I needed).

I ended up with a Toshiba, similar price and spec (but with a Pentium).
Very pleased with it so far :thumb2

BTW - I know feck all about computers, just passing on what I was told.

Another vote for Acer

I bought one for my daughter and it's a cracking machine - at an amazing price. Now even cheaper at eBuyer.

It comes with Vista Home Premium and all the hardware you need (including a 14.1" screen, so the machine is relatively compact). The only additions recommended would be an upgrade to the memory and an extended warranty (available through eBuyer). For this money, you can't go wrong.

Firewire???

I've noticed that this laptop dosen't have firewire. I take it i can buy an adapter card thing that will give me a firewire port allowing me to hook my camcorder up to the laptop?
