I replace my laptop every 18 months at work, after various models have had a Sony which has been so good now determined to replace it with another Sony. I have been using XP for last few years and need to log on to an XP network at school, so was going to get another XP laptop but not easy to find as most seem to be Vista now. If I buy a laptop loaded with Vista can I still log on to XP network or does anyone have experience of running XP and Vista on the same machine? Thanks for reading this!

My 11 inch Sony ultra book I recently bought for travelling came with Vista business installed, so far so good.

+ point, Sony will send you full XP downgrade disks if you ask them, I was going to do it, but it has been running fine on vista for the last 2 months, so I'm not going to bother.

Vista laptops will connect to an XP based network with no problem- the issue with Vista on a laptop is more about the speed of the thing- Vista requires a lot more resources to run smoothly so unless it's a pretty high specced machine, XP will run significantly faster.

You may also have issues with it if you have a lot of 'acquired' music- or you don't like being told every three minutes that your permission is needed to do something really simple (Vista is windows for eedjits in many ways) but otherwise, it's pretty and it's stable from my experience.

True

True, really started fecking me off until I stopped all that nanny stuff:spitfire

We have four laptops of various manufacture in our household. One Win 98, one XP, and two Vista. The only problem we have had with Vista is getting some sewing software installed on my wife's, and I'm not completely sure it's a Vista problem considering the package is dongle protected. XP will eventually be abandoned by Microsoft as 98 was, so you're going to have a supported OS longer with Vista.

Hi Rolf, I purchased a new Vista laptop a couple of weeks ago. I have a xp on my my home network pc's and two other laptops all running xp. My experience getting the vista laptop working with my current network was a pain in the ass. It took me some days before I finally resolved the problem even after trying all the changes I found on various networking forums. I was about to dowgrade it to XP and finally found the cause which was a simple as a change in the Registry which sorted instantly. Now I have made a few tweaks in vista it seems ok but the only feature I have found in vista that I have found useful is that it seems to want to find and update much of my laptops hardware components which xp never seemed capable of doing.

Good luck.

stick with XP

Vista is crxp, have had several problems an our work network. Give them time to iron it out

Have bought 2 laptops in the past 4 months, both running XP and compared to a friends high spec sony running vista they are both much faster. It should be some time before support for XP is dropped completely. Vista is so resource hungry even on a decent spec machine.

Beat deal and spec for a 17" Screen Laptop

Student son requires lap top wants 17" screen and highst spec for his course work!

Advice and place to purchase very welcomed.:thumb2

Yeah, right. More like he wants high spec for gaming and willy waving with his mates.

My lad started A levels last autumn. I bought him a £400 Acer from http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/ which seems fine. They do some competitive insurance packages too. XP systems available.

Vista on laptops is fine, if the O/S comes as an option the box should run it OK and I find it robust, stable, secure and very easy to use. XP of course is a very viable alternative and now SP3 is in RC it should be a serious consideration

I guess Linux is out of the question?
