Hello

Here's the problem...

Sony Vaio laptop. Hasn't been working properly since we downloaded Windows 10 (that was the first mistake...).

Reinstalled Google Chrome today, but that was working fine. When went to sleep and was very slow to restart. The operative did a forced shutdown - held the power button for five seconds - partway through the restart because it was taking so long and she's impatient (possibly mistake number 2).

Now it won't restart at all. Get a message saying "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart." The small print says "error FAT_FILE_SYSTEM" Then it tries to restart, same error message except it says "NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM". Then tries to restart and reverts to FAT-FILE-SYSTEM. and so on, alternative between FAT and NTFS.

Any clues, please? We don't have a start-up CD or DVD. We've tried turning ti off, removing battery and so on, but each time we try to start it up the above pattern repeats.

Thanks in advance...

on start up try press ing ALT and F10 this should take you to a factory start up menu

Did you not create a recovery cd?.....guess not or you wouldn't be asking.
Those are fatal error messages to do with the hard drive file management system.
Try Del or F8 while starting up or whatever it is in Sonys to get into the bios menu.
See if there's a recovery partition on your hard drive.
If not you'll be needing an OS on disc to boot from.

The disk is screwed up because it was writing to it when it was force shutdown. You will need to find a boot disk from somewhere and run chkdsk. If you have access to another machine you can download win 10, burn it to a dvd and boot from it. When you get to the install screen click repair computer and from there you will get a command prompt where you can run. Instructions with pictures here https://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=6565 doesn't have to be a win 10 disk anything from visa up will work.

You might be able to boot into safe mode as well and run chkdsk, instructions at same link. I doubt that will work though but it might.

Everything you need to repair or restore should be on a factory set up disk partition and can be accessed through the the "Vaiocare" menu if you can get into that ?
