I want a big fat back tyre on my R12GS, has anyone tried putting a fat section tyre on? what's the biggest you can have? or is it standard only? The back tyre seems meesley in size... feedback appreciated

Stick with standard

The bike has been designed to run with a 150 section rear tyre, if you oversize the tyre the natural handling of the of the bike will be badly effected!! The lovely flickability will be lost and high speed stability will be greatly comprimised by the distortion of the tyre on the wrong size rim.
So my advice would be to leave well alone. Besides big fat tyres are for huge speeds and lean angles on sportsbikes on tracks. On the road the standard tyre can match any lean angle or corner speed of any sportsbike with added agility as standard with a 150 section. Thats why the little sports 400's with the 150 section rears steered so quickly.

With the exhaust so close, you dont have a lot of room to manoeuvre ... I would think maybe you could stick a 160 on there, but dont idle for too long or you might melt the tyre

You'll have to watch for insurance implications should you have to make a claim. You'd also have to claim the modification when you renew - with the new Fraud Act you'd be foolish not to!!

The clearance is so small to exhaust (although a different can might help) and swingarm means that a bigger tyre isn't really an option.

Cool carbs

If you're sticking with original wheels, it'll easily carry a 160...

Change to 17" pure road wheels front and rear off one of the other models and you'll get a 180 on it..

Now THATis rather special! Just the way I'd like mine. Particularly impressed by the sensible addition of an auxiliary pair of 1960's Amals to supplement the nancy fuel injection. Oh the stories one could relate about the glories of chopped twin 379's ... or was it 376's ... TT's .. GP's .......zzzzzzz? (drifts off in nostalgic haze of numb fingers , blurred vision, stale petrol, goldie cans on full song, rebuilds every other Saturday .......) Yawn where was I ? Hmm must be time for a nice cup of cocoa.

Cheers

PS in case you are wondering WTF the senile old git is drivelling on about, I should point out I'm looking at the second row of pics. The bike with the blue graphics ............
