Oily back tyre revisited

Thanks for the tips guys - I used the talc method to trace a cylinder head leak a couple of months ago, so I know it can be pretty effective :thumb2

However, in this case, the oil is coming from the little slot between the bottom of the swingarm and the bottom lip of the gearbox casing - impossible to get talc on the back face of the gearbox (and them impossible to see it without removing the swingarm!).

So, the swing arm's got to come out. To be honest, I'm ok with it - as the bike's done 34k, it'll be a good chance to check the paralever and swingarm bearings. I just need to research a good method for re-torquing the bearing pre-load / locknuts without the special tool.

I'm sure I read something about locktiting the pre-load screw and using a marker pen to mark its position once you've torqued it (and then possibly leaving it for the locktite to go off?) before attacking the locknut. But I'm bu**ered if I can find it (and I can't remember if I read it on here or ADV).

cheers
Matt

ye have just about got it, but when torquing the pivot bolt up , move yer swing arm up and down so to get the correct torque setting, and if ye mark yer locking nut ye can see if its moved or not...
best to get a mate to help..

look at mine n diggers thread gearbox removal, :augie

I've just had something of an epiphany.

In my latest bout of 'where the feck is this oil coming from' head scratching I stuck my hand in the gap between the top of the swingarm and the gearbox casting and had a feel of the swingarm to gearbox boot.

Turns out it's not 'engaged' on the gearbox side :blast . I guess this explains how oil is leaking out of the output seal without running down the swingarm. No idea how long its been like this - hopefully the drive shaft UJ hasn't suffered.. I'm not surprised it's adrift - it looks like it'll be a right sod to get this boot on properly.

Just about to order a new output seal from Motorworks :thumb2

Ass regards the gearbox input and output seals what is the best way of positioning them as they do not seem to be installed all the way down the shafts.... but they do not have anything to locate against.

So how deep do you fit them ? all the way down the shaft or to just below the shoulder that is below the splines?

Mystery oil leak - take two

Fat fingers and small keys - aaaah.

As I said above, I had an 1100GS that developed mysterious oil spots around the back wheel area.

When I had the rear wheel off for a new tyre, I found gungy stuff all over the oil seal on the hub ( where the wheel bolts to ). We sprayed brake cleaner over the seal and wiped with a clean rag. Put everything back together and no more leaks !

Worth a try, and no $$$'s spent.

Very good question :)

I'm intending to get it all dismantled today and order the parts I need.
When it comes to seal fitting time, I'll have to do some research!

Thanks for the suggestion Greg, but in my case its definitely gearbox oil. However, as the wheel and FD has to come off, I'll be checking the FD oil seal as I go.

Good luck with the research as that is what I am still doing! Hance the question... gearbox sat there second set of seals ordered and no feckin idea of how deep to fit the new ones without them leaking again!

Just got my rear end stripped down (pictures to follow), but I measured the depth of the output seal with the depth probe of a vernier. It was 2.45mm below the lip of the housing. What I can't say is if the seal bottoms against the bearing or sits with some clearance and I don't know how critical is is - from the look of it, I can't see being critical as it sits next to a sealed (or shielded?) bearing :nenau

I'm afraid I can't help with the input seal, but hope this helps a bit.

Respect!

Thanks for posting that - it'll no doubt come in useful for others when the time comes. Now that you've got that far I think I'd do the extra work then you know it's all ok.
