Just got a new nano which sits really neatly in a small aqua box on the bars. No worries with crashing or trailing leads now but the bl@@dy volume is anoying. Used gopod on my 5G ipod which gives plenty of volume for the autocom with earplugs but it won't work on the new un. (yes i've tried it in disk mode:P)
Tried eupod but that just seems to erase all the tunes of the ipod (yes itunes is closed when I've run it):spitfire.
Upped all the track volumes in itunes by 50% but it's still way too quiet.
Off the bike with headphones my uncapped 5g is unbearable at 65% volume but the nano is just "loud" not even "really loud" never mind "Feck that hurts loud"
Anyone got round it yet?

Another victim of fashion. Ipods may be trendy but there are better MP3 players on the market.

An iPod is more than an MP3 player.

I have Apple Mac computers so am able to make the most of the iPod features.

My Apple iPod Nano can do the following with the very minimum of fuss:

* Sync and play my Music via Apple iTunes

* Sync and watch my Videos via Apple iTunes (My Apple Quicktime software can easily export all types of movie files straight to iPod compatible files in one click of my mouse). I now have loads of short videos due to finding out how to convert uTub videos to iPod format. It can also sync movie formatted projects I have completed in other Apple software such as iMovie, Pages and Keynote.

* Sync and view my Calendars via Apple iCal which in turn Syncs to all my computers via Apple iSync and online via Apple .Mac (Also syncs straight to my Motorola V3)

* Sync and view my Contacts via Apple Address Book which in turn Syncs to all my computers via Apple iSync and online via Apple .Mac (Also syncs straight to my Motorola V3)

* Sync and view my Photos from Apple iPhoto via Apple iTunes. Just like iTunes I can choose to have all or just selected playlists/albums. My iPod Nano can also download photos directly from my camera if my memory card was full.

* Sync and listen to all my subscribed to Podcasts via Apple iTunes

* Sync my Games via Apple iTunes (Tetris & Pacman at the moment)

* Sync my Nike+ running (well walking) data straight to the Nike+ online site via iTunes. The Nike+ feature of my iPod Nano I find is very handy for setting exercise goals and works great with my music collection.

* I can also transfer my college notes and other documents to my iPod and view them in the Notes section of my Nano

So what other MP3 can do all of the above, and still look trendy, and only measures 6.9 x 5.2 x 0.7cm and weigh less than 50g. :augie

Already did that terayon:thumb2, the sound check is off too.
I did look at other players but I couldn't find anything that looked much better (I needed solid state and small as possible for the bike) with 8gb of solid state memory, especially for £120.
Its very easy to operate in the aquabox on the go and apart from the volume thing it's great.I can live with it but AC/DC sounds better when it hurts:D Guess I'll just have to wait for the gopod update:(

The line level out is also crippled on the new nano.

A friend of mine bought one and was having a problem getting it to play through his stereo, so I went round there with my 5th gen and dock. Nano seems to be about half the perceived volume compared to the old one.

I suspect they've moved to some low voltage chip-set that simply can't generate the levels required.

5th Gen ipod batteries are 3.7 volts according to maplin, so there's a good chance it can get >1v line levels. I can't in a quick google, find the battery specs for the new ones as they're too new to need replacing.

Would be interested to hear if anyone has used them with custom monitors. (custom earplugs with speakers in)

I've had a customer recently complain that everything was suddenly far too loud with his new monitors :D - we managed to fix that problem, but I wondered if blocking out the background noise and playing the new iPod straight into the ear was enough to hear it clearly. :nenau

More likely it's to prevent you getting hearing damage and then sueing Apple. :D

With the headphones I agree, but it's not *that* loud on the old ones anyway, and you can cap it as suggested above. Removing the next level of capping was popular amongst the mutton too.

The line level is variable as well but seeing as it gets to your ears via another amp with a volume knob shouldn't really need capping or crippling for earphone safety.

Works well with monitors ( I have UE ones for longhaul flights / motorway bike trips) can't say they were overly loud but that's what the volume setting is for anyway. Definitely lacking in bass response, but acceptable given the primary function is blocking outside noise anyway.

I would expect it would be better with monitors but I want the ease of just pulling on my lid and plugging into my autocom, it's quick and neat with other wires or connections to worry about. I've found when using just an ipod on it's own with monitors or with the ipod in my pocket I have a couple of leads flapping about and feel restricted.
I use earplugs and am probably going to give some custom molded ones a go soon. With the uncapped 5G ipod the sound is great via the autocom with plugs but it kept crashing when hard mounted on the bike hence the nano.
