My 2011 r1200gs twin cam is turning over very slowly when I am trying to start it, as if it has a dead battery, I bought a new battery to eliminate the battery as being the issue, and the problem is still there. What should check next please guys
It won’t turnover fast enough to start engine

Thanks guys

I’ve just run a jump lead from the neg terminal on the connected battery to a good earth on the engine and it solved the problem, am guessing my earth is rubbish. Next question is where is the earth on my bike ?

On top of the engine, under the tank.

I had similar -

2nd set of leads to the starter / battery made little difference

New starter & 2nd set of leads - like the bike is brand new :)

The earth terminal is on the engine.
On every auto scan with the GS911 I have always had Low battery voltage the problem is no longer present.
I have just serviced the starter motor and as I had some 10mmsq red and black cable on the shelf I have double wired the starter circuit this has improved the starting and I no longer get the fault code.
On looking at the wiring schematic there is a 10mmsq cable to starter +ve and a 2.5mmsq cable to the ecu`s etc.
The grounds -ve have a single 10mmsq cable which has to service the starter and the ecu`s ,
So best to double up on both cables but if doing only one do the ground _ve.

So tank off it is then, is the earth terminal on the engine or frame ?
you really don't want to go looking for it!!! Its on top of the block buried below the battery tray and the throttle cable splitter

They usually are not the problem / Double check your Cable to battery contact point and that it is nipped up sufficiently on the battery

My suggestion is get a bit of multistrand cable rather than a single core! I think I bought 2 x 1metre (1m Red, 1m black) of 6 gauge off Musk's Emporium and a couple of M6 or M8 cable terminations and crimped, dielectric greased the wire / termination and heat shrunk that last 2cm of the cable and the termination

Just make up an additional run from Battery Negative to any bolt on the frame or engine that has a clean surface (and bolts directly to metal and not a vibration damper, Seen a couple of those that eventually solved a mystery or two when I worked at them!!) Even run it down to the starter if you so desire? I am sure You get the picture

Edit I have just seen Mistacats reply above Generally I only do the battery negative, as the only real time that the starter positive is under pressure is starting up and much more so when the ground is not good But he is not wrong either! It is just your choice what suits or what works

For me the additional positive wire is a rub or chaff point and usually not fused !

Thanks for advice I’ll put extra cable from negative frame as advised and let you know but thanks again

Interesting...I'll be fitting an extra earth tomorrow! mine has been a bit lazy to turn over sometimes, even after a good run. Also a new battery fitted. Thanks for the info DrFarkoff (y)

I have now fitted a new cable (multi strand) with copper crimped ends from the battery to the starting motor...and it has improved the starting incredibly! Cant believe the difference! It turned over far quicker than ever before (I've only owned it from last October!) from cold and when warmed up too. I even tried it repeatedly and it started every time with no issues...something I would not try before!
I will investigate the original earth cable and clean it up when I have some spare time.
Thanks again for all you guys for the input and the time you spend helping others (y) AJ

I noticed Halfords do some very nice off the shelf cables spot on for this mod. Thankfully my bike doesn’t suffer in this way but I’ll be off to Halfords if anything changes.

Mine was from my TL1000R which I did an upgrade, so had plenty left over. Thanks for the heads up on Halfords (y)

Sorry for being slow, you’ve fitted an additional EARTH from the battery to an earth point on the starter motor

That's what I used, the 24 inch items I believe

One from the starter solenoid to the battery, and one from the starter / body/engine mount to the battery
