After several people suggesting the 650 standard headlight is a bit on the dim side, I plumped for an LED headlight replacement bulb. Nothing special but it is dedicated offering for the 650 Xcountry (presumably the other two as well). I just got it from the usual e6ay for the princely sum of £18, which I think is a lot for a healight bulb, but it is cheaper than the HID systems used to be. The 1150GS HID bulbs were £100 for the pair, and I wasn't sure if they were worth it, so went for the higher output standard bulbs instead.

Anyway, back to the H4 LED replacement. here is how it arrivved in the box. There are various filters to change the colour temperature. I have lleft it standard - it is daylight matched. I can always add the filter later if I think it needs it.

Note how the heat sink is now incorporated in the back making it compact enough to fit inside the headlamp shell.

The healamp is retained in the shell by three socket screws, on mine anyway. Just unscrew the three retaining screws....

The rim comes off and the shell comes out.

The three pin socket is simply pulled off....

Take off the wires and then remove the weatherproofing rubber boot that covers all the bulbs.

Taking the bulb out just needs the double spring clip to be taken off the catches

Be careful the bulb doesn't just fall out, there is nothing else retaining it. So it will just lift out.

This LED bulb kit is suitable for either H4 or H7 fitments. The Xcountry is an H4 fitment. The retaining ring fits on the bulb with a bayonet mount, just unscrew it

Put the tube of the bulb through the rubber boot

Then fold the rubber boot back over itself so you can refit the bayonet ring

I won't pretend getting the wire springs past the upturned rubber boot is easy, but it is manageable with a little bit of swearing at it and digit dexterity - BEND THE BUGGERS ROUND. :D Then get the two bayonets for the pilot bulb lined up with their slots in the rubber boot so the cables can be reattached

All that remains is to plug the 3-pin plug into the wiring loom 3-pin socket. There is a rubber boot on the plug end, but it didn't reach my socket! It doesn't matter, it is well protected anyway.

The heat sink and the plug both fit into the recess at the back of the headlight shell.

Bung it all back together with the three socket head screws....

Finally, turn on and check it all works! Hooray, we have light. This is on dip beam. I forgot to try it on high beam because it was so bright. :thumby:

I still have to see what the shape and reach of the headlight throw is like, but I will do that on Monday - it is going to be chucking it down tomorrow. :augie

Nice write up and photos

You can remove the "bulb" part from the round base on the LED unit to ease fitment of the retention spring - it is on pins just like a normal light bulb . I did this LED upgrade to my XMoto back in September and also upgraded the indicators to the BMW LED ones :-)

Do you have ebay link or listing number for the LED H4 you used please

Hi. Considering going down this route too. Have you been able to check how well the low/high beam works and how good the beam spread is?

Looks pretty simple. How would you rate the improvement? Any negatives?

Anyone replaced their 1150GS main & dip bulbs with LEDs? Sufficient improvement to justify cost/effort? Which ones? Where'd you get them?

I think £18 for a decent quality LED bulb is very cheap indeed at current prices, check out the price of the 'posh' gear here CYCLOPS Adv Sport

Does the bulb you fitted have a fan or is that a heat sink on the rear of it?

Wouldn't have thought an LED Cree bulb would need a heat sink Andres, don't they run über cool?

:beerjug:

Edit ... Hey Simon (King Rat) they'd better be good, just ordered :D

Get ya at playtime if they're crap :rob

I'm no expert TBH which is why I was curious but the Cree bulbs I just fitted to my 1190R (from Cyclops) have separate power supplies and built in fans at the base of the 'bulbs' - sounds well weird to hear a fan come on when your lights come on :D

Less than £18, only just over £12. I used this one.....I think, it looks the same as is the same price.

Tonight, now the snow has gone, I took her out to see what the LED bulb is like. Well, it is certainly bright, even on dip beam, BUT, I have got to angle the beam down a bit, I was disturbing the pigeons roosting in the trees. :D It is only a matter of getting the beam direction correct. On high beam it was superb. Without any filters it is about the same as daylight and I bet I had 80 yards good visibility down the road. I will pace it out when I get the beam angle adjusted. The spread is quite wide on dip, but sufficient 'centre circle' to illuminate your track ahead, with some spillage to give you a good idea of what is lurking outside the main beam, so pedestrians on a country road for example, you will get more warning of them. The middle part of the beam illumnates very noticeably further than the bulb I took out, which I haven't a clue about because it was in there when I got it. Presumably just a standard 50w / 55w. There are the upgrade bulbs available too, normal H4 with higher draw and brighter (presumably hotter running), Phillips state 30% brighter, but they are the same price as the LEDs, lets see how long the LED lasts before drawing a final conclusion.

Thanks, that's very helpful. Think I'll give it a go too; for less than £14 delivered its no more than an upgraded bulb ...

Something I meant to say, like the original HID systems on the 1150s, the daylight riding aspect of the dip beam is much brighter when you look at it, so other road users will see a brighter light as a daytime marker.

LEDs produce heat on the circuit board end, not where the light comes out. The bulb in question looks to have a pretty large heat sink. I'd be nervous about fitting anything that might get warm in a plastic headlamp, though...

Hi Simon,

I've ordered one of these LED lights, but I've just had an email from EBay saying that the Package has been rejected by customs due to incorrect paperwork and may attract a high import duty?

Did you have any of this when you ordered yours, and what was the bill from UK customs like?

Regards,

Nathan
LED Lights should attract 0% duty According to the Customs tariff Light emitting Diodes are classified under tariff number 8541401000 duty is zero but vat is 20% However many exporters from China miss declare the goods as computer parts ( also 0% duty) and under declare the value so as to avoid the VAT.
