Now i know that NN does a rear light LED insert, (for about £45 +) that fits into the existing, rather feeble GS PD rear enclosure, but does anybody on the GS site make anything similar ?

Now Winter is here, I get a bit nervous that my rear light, and stop light are not very bright compared to more modern brake lights etc. I would also feel more re-assured that an LED set up is not going to pack up and blow, like a regular tungsten bulb.

So, anyone know of an alternative that will fit right in place of the existing bulb. I do not want to modify the look of the bike in any way, so want to retain the original enclosure.

My bike is 1993 100GS PD, so it has a small square housing, with a clear bit for the number plate illumination, and of course the single bulb for rear and brakes.

Any help appreciated.:thumb

There was some talk of someone making up a batch but they were going to cost in the region of £40 IIRC and I don't know if anything came of it.
Another lad whose name I forget had made his own, I PM'd him asking for more details but never heard back and I'm not sure he's around anymore. :nenau
I ended up putting a LED replacement bulb in mine.
I'd be interested in a LED insert if the price was right.

Thanks fellas, and I wondered if Techno was still around and if he'd made anything "Airhead". I'll drop him a PM
Cheers

Dont think LEDs arnt going to pack up.
I fitted a NN LED rear light panel to the rear of my 07 1200,half of the LEDs have packed up,the way the rest are flickering I wouldnt think theyre going to last much longer.
If I choose to replace it with the same Ill have paid £150 for two rear light bulbs in less than 2 yrs.!
Not a really good deal.IMO.

I think, from other users of the NN LED insert, that it is not well made -probably cheapo LEDs, or poor soldering or something. That's partly why I've not rushed to buy a NN unit:(
I had about half a dozen blue LEDS form Ultralight, and they all blew , some within a few minutes of use - I reverted to the good old tungsten bulbs ( these were for the speedo and rev counter on 1150). So, yes, I agree-not ALL LEDs are good -there's good ones and bad ones on the market. But, nearly all my Studio gear nowadays has LEDs and they very very rarely blow -on for hours at a time, get hot, flash on and off ( as intended that is !!), and they seem to last forever, so it can be done :D That's why decent LED lights seem, at first, expensive.

Now if Techno gets back to me, I have much faith in the quality of his design and manufacture, nudge nudge ...:augie

I see you can get red or white LEDs
do the red ones send as much light through a red lens? or does the red lens reduce the output?

Thanks England Kev- I've had a look, and yes he does have direct replacement bulbs that would do the job. I had similar type bulbs on my 1150 rear, and even with two of them ( i had the special TT rear light which had 2 bulbs), they weren't very bright -in daylight the stop lights were pretty dim, especially off-axis, but Paul Goff's might well be better.

I'll wait and see what Techno comes up with, as I'm sure his will have more LEDs, as they'll be on a large pcb, and probably higher intensity ones too. What I was looking for was a better and more reliable version of the NN rear, and hopefully Techno wil, at some point not too far off, come up with the goods.;)

You'll be needing white ones if you have the same rear enclosure as I have on my GS PD , 'cos legally you need a white light for the number plate. Don't know if you'd get pulled over for this ( maybe in N Wales !!!), but might be a problem come MOT time.:blast

Yes, you'd need some white ones pointing down for the plate.
But another advantage of red LEDs is if your lens gets broken, you are still showing a red light to the rear instead of white.

norbsa02 (link posted above) do one with 18 red leds for stop/tail and 6 white ones around the outside edge - to light the numberplate, best of both worlds?
