I’ve got the new type tensioner on the left side cylinder 2004 1150 28000 miles I think it’s fitted as standard on that year?
But it still rattles likes a mother on start up. Do they ever play up or go wrong? Don’t seem to remember any of my other 1150’s still that bad on starting after fitting new type tensioner. Plus my mates 80000 Bike is dead quite:nenau

The upgraded part has a different hex-head size. Smaller AFAIR.
Easy to tell if you remove it; the spring is a seperate part in the older assembly. But wait until an expert comes along to tell you if the upgraded part was indeed standard in 2004. You could have a look on realoem and see what part number is specified.

It’s defo the later one but still bad on start up. Hoping it’s not the blade

Dreadful thought! If the noise stops after starting, when oil pressure has risen then it shouldn't be the tensioner - I'd have thought. Maybe just defective.

Yep small size head, I'll have to pull it out and have a good look inside I think

Sorry, I got it arse about face. I meant .. noise only at startup - a faulty tensioner; noise all the time - possible broken guide. I'm sure you thought of that.
There was a lengthy thread recently that began as a possible broken guide and led to a rebuild. Can't locate it though.

Its fine I've done a couple on my brothers bike.

Don’t assume

That you have a new type tensioner even through you have a 15mm hex head on it.
