So on my third GSA and absolutely love the 2021 r1250 .. But I have a weird issue , the left indicator some times doesn't activate !! So whilst at the dealership for the first service I mentioned it to them. And amazingly they said this is a known software issue !!! Bloody software !! what happned to the days of electric connections on/off !! Anyway after a 4.5 hours software update It still periodically fails to activate !! So I guess I will have to go back to the dealers but wondered if anybody else had experienced the issue ? Right indication is fine but left is a bit hap hazzard.. Its annoying coz I end up looking down all the time to ensure its actually activated which is obviously a bit dangerous. No wise cracks about sometimes its on and sometimes its off :aidan

Cheers

That sounds more to me like the handlebar switch unit needs replacing, maybe not making the connection properly

"Known software issue"?
I have no knowledge about where the dealer got that information, but it does not sound plausible.

The modules that activate the indicators have been around for several years. Software bugs usually pop up in the beginning of development, not after several years of service...

And a software issue is usually very predictable and follows a pattern of when it occures. On the other hand, if the issue follows a random pattern, it is most likely a mechanical issue, in this case a faulty switch.

I have not heard of the 'Known software issue', but I have certainly heard of the 'failing switchgear' issue, which is widely known, even if it seems to be much less frequent now than it used to be...

I put my 2021 GSA 1250 in for it's first service last week and was told it would take a little longer due to a software update they had to do for the "Indicator fault". I'd not heard or had any issues with my bike but it's obviously common knowledge with the dealers (took 1hr for software update).

well you may have no knowledge of it, but I have just had a software update on my 21 model for a "indicator issue"

There you go . Now I know :D :okay

And what is the issue, if I may ask. Did the update make a visible difference when using the indicators?

I didnt knowingly have an issue to be honest, so havn't noticed anything different. However the indicators on the 21 models are different to those of old, for instance the front ones are on permanently now (cruising lights) and only flash when you want to turn.

I suspect it's more specifically a software bug in how the bike talks to the LHS switchgear module that manifests as an indicator fault. At a guess.

Although not a BMW, my friend had a Triumph Street Triple with the new TFT dash when they first came out which randomly the indicators would fail to function although everything else on the LHS switchgear worked. They replaced the switchgear and associated wiring harness to no avail. Eventually it had a software update and the problems been gone every since. They said it was miscommunication between the module in the switch and the TFT which turned out to be a software issue.

That's interesting because at my first service, 600 miles a couple of weeks ago, my dealer said that they had to do a software update - when asked they said that it was something to do with the "interaction" between the TFT and the indicators, weird.

nothing lasts forever steve:D

I have the same issue the left hand indicator doesnt operate correctly, right hand indicator is fine as is the hazard warning lights. Its a 2013 1200GS LC, any suggestions?

My 2021 GSA was fine but I was also told when I collected it after the 600. mile service that it had a software recall done for the indicators.

No issues before or since.

Well I have a sticky indicator :D I wondered why I was getting the odd horn blast when turning. My cancel function sticks in, it still moves side to side so you think you’ve activated the indicators but they haven’t :blast

Mentioned it to a tech at Bahnstormers yesterday who came and fiddled and they are fitting a new left side unit next week when it has its RIS.
