Hi All,

so my rear left indicator on my 2010 twincam is not working (intermittently) with an error message on the screen. I dismantle the rear bits, thinking its a simple swap for a new indicator, but its not, because the new indicator does not work either....so the problem must be further up the wiring...

indicators are led indicators, if it makes any difference...

i squirted contact cleaner into the indicator plug/socket....but the pins are clean, and all seems "factory" so i dont think the problem is there...

before i dismantle half the bike, can anyone direct me to the indicator relay (or its equivalent on canbus) so that i can see where the fault lies please? alternatively if there are any connections in the wiring which could be a fault, could you help please?

probably dead "they do that sir...."

there's a post a few months about exactly this.... if you can reach the connector swap and see if it moves to the other side.... if so likely its the unit that died. LampF might help in your search I can't find it...

wow it did

LAMPF doesn't just mean 'Lamp Front' as it would suggest..... From the manual.....

LAMPR ! appears on the display - Rear light defective
LAMPF ! appears on the display - Headlight or turn indicator bulb defective
LAMPS ! appears on the display - Bulbs defective

His new indicator also doesn’t work so it’s not the indicator unit.

No, its not the indicator unit, neither is it the connector connecting to the rear indicator unit (looks clean and in good condition)....could it be that the front indicator has failed, but the rear is not flashing?

There is not a traditional flasher unit.
The indicators are controlled by the ZFE Central electronics unit.
The ground ( Brown) wires are all linked , so try running a jumper wire to the battery negative.
The feed is from pin 20 (Blue with red and white tracer wire) on the ZFE ECU. Try a link wire to by-pass this.
Or try connecting the known good Led indicator to pin 20 and ground at the ECU.
If there is a short to ground on the feed wire the ECU might well shut that circuit down until the fault is rectified.
Just a few thoughts.
Good luck.

Sorry stupid question?

Where is the ZFE please?

My moneys on a broken wire,

right around a point where it's cable tied to the frame ;)

Totally agree , it is most likely to be a broken wire, BMW will insist on strapping the looms up so tight.
Just listing the test procedure I would go through.
When continuity testing the loom I prefer to use a 12 volt battery and an old 60w sealed beam unit.
This will put a 5 amp load on the cables which will help show up any breaks in the cable or bad connections, which a multi-meter can miss.

would it not be easier to go round the bike and plug in the new unit at each location till they start functioning normally.....

which with the info we now have clarity on, might mean the front on the same side as a starting point
