Whilst gaily copying gigabytes of music files and playlists to a 4Gb Micro SD card inserted withing the 660, in preparation for trip to the South of France tomorrow, I noticed, using Windows File Explorer, that I managed to copy some files to the zumo unit's internal flash drive, rather than the card.

Easy-peasy, I thought. So I just dragged and dropped the files and folders from one t'other, and hey presto, fanny's yer aunt.

Or so I thought.

Later, when I reconnected my zumo to transfer some routes, it wouldn't work. It wasn't being recognised as a device, the blue triangle drive icon wasn't displaying (even though it was on the root of the zumo's internal drive), there were no maps or configuration files, and when I did manage to connect and look at the flash drive, it was practically empty. I was not a happy bunny.

I discovered that I had moved the 'Garmin' folder to the memory card! :blast Stupid thing to do, but I thought I'd simply move it back and it would work.

Sadly, it didn't! Somewhere in the transfer, something became corrupted, or lost, and even with the help of Garmin's excellent telephone support team and a full system reset and maps reinstall, we just couldn't get the thing to work properly.

So, I ended up driving a 180mile round trip to collect a replacement unit, free of charge, ready-charged and loaded with all the latest goodies, and without p-taking from Garmin. Very no-fuss attitude. Thanks, Steve :thumb

The moral of the story is:-

If you're copying Music files, or Routes or Waypoints, etc to your zumo, do it to the memory card installed in a separate card reader/writer and out of the actual zumo. This way, it removes the human error element of getting confused with drive letters etc., especially if you also name the memory card's volume label to something obvious, like MUSIC! :D

This may be old-hat for the more seasoned 550/660 users, but for me it was a vital learning curve!

Useful warning. Ta.

I too was transferring music files yesterday to a 4Gb Micro SD card in the 600 and the thing that confused me at first was I couldn't tell which of the two drives was the card because - without me doing anything - the Zumo seemed to have copied some picture files (Panoramio) to the new card just inserted :nenau I looked at properties and quickly sorted out which was which, but I can't remember having anything automatically move files on insertion before.

Yes - as it readily recognises the card without refering to it from menus when looking for routes or MP3 files etc, it copies core folders onto the card by default. They usually don't contain much, unless you've already copied music and photos etc to the device itself, in which case they'll be transferred, too.

DON'T DELETE THEM!

Luckily, it doesn't work the other way round. i.e. files copied to the card are not automatically transferred to the device, unless you do it manually.

Just rename the SD card to MUSIC or something obvious - that's what I had to do, and I've been in IT for 25 years :blast

Thanks mate. Does naming the card stop the Zumo from transferring other files to it in future, or won't it do it anymore anyway?

Cheers.

Good heads up :thumb2

Thanks.

PS I am far from a PC / IT genius but can vouch for the excellent support Garmin gives over the phone and / or with repairs.

Richard - I know you've gone all elevated status on us old 550 boys but I've just posted THIS up regarding transferring music and in particular playlists.

If you don't use it try it - way better than iTunes and having to use Playlist Maker.

I thank you. :beerjug:

Popeye,
after following your earlier thread re the problems putting music onto a SD card. I've downloaded Mediamonkey, but how do you remove the DRM tags from the i-tunes tracks.?? Sorry old technophobe.:rob

You need a specific piece of software. I use Tune Bite, but that probably does what munkyboy does too (whatever it's called). Munkychunky may already do it, though?

Google 'un-drm' or 'remove drm', and you may find something, but be careful of dodgy warez sites etc.
