Let's see what all the fuss is about

Is there a solution? Someone quote me happy!

Yes, get over it, buy a great bike to ride rather than a crap one that looks symmetrical.

People who buy bikes for looks hang around looking at bikes in gatherings full of other people looking at bikes and only need panniers to give the impression they do sometimes get beyond their own post code.

Now then. About my obsessive compulsive 'symmetry disorder'.

I seem to be looking at a 1290 S. I blame this thread, obviously. And the Tuono (incredible bike) threads in other interwebchats aren't doing my heart much good either.

I only seem to be able to find non-symmetrical panniers for the 1290. Ali ones. There's an exhaust of course, but the GS manages the symmetry issue very nicely.

This one thing would put me off, sadly. I think rear looks are awful with mixed size panniers.

Holans work for me but then I am not OCD :augie

Try Bumot or Holan panniers - do a search on this site - lots of info. Or as already said, go soft :D

I like the look of the narrower Holans, the rails look to sit closer than the Givi ones, which combined with huge panniers makes my bike fully loaded as wide as a small car....

....although handy to have a combined 85L, and it means we both get a "large" pannier each, 48L for her / 37L for me - leaving the top boxes fairly light (spare gloves etc)

Holans are a whole 3 inches narrower than the standard breadbins, makes all the difference filtering!
added bonus they weigh together the same as one standard breadbin!!

Other than Touratech, what other options are there for a smallish (around 25 litre) black metal topbox?

Holan do a 17L one and a 38L one - good price as well ;)

Although personally I like the Givi Trekker 33 L in black which is good but obviously will not fit a helmet in it.

The Pro Photo looks good.:thumb

The other alternative is a KTM rigid soft bag, as long as they are waterproof.

I assume that if using the Givi or Holan, I'd need to order the KTM top box rack, or would this rack below that comes as standard work?

No - not needed - you just need the appropriate Givi or Holan plate and fitting kit to fit onto the standard rack :)

Wow! You killed any small children walking down the pavement with those black daddy's? Be interested to know the width side to side to compare to GS.

Africa Twin test ride today. Probably great for off-road but after getting back on the GSA the Twin seemed a very poor relation. The buffeting at anything over 60 was laughable. Horrid dash. Shame. Going to try a Tiger 800 X, felt quite light in the showroom. The 1200 felt incredibly top heavy. Running out of options for something that comes close to the GS...I guess that's what years of development gets you. Although the new 800 GS could use a bit more work - vibration city.

I wouldn't cancel the order.

This stuff happens in manufacturing. Been there and done that a very great deal.

Some things are out of your control when making stuff. Other things are within your control but an employee or team messes up a little. Other things just come out of the woodwork - you can predict likely issues sometimes, but other issues come from nowhere and you have to go with the flow. It's normal and people who moan and groan about how 'it's not right' have probably never made anything start to finish. Of course we all think they should know better, and that's probably true, but we have to live in the real world. The stuff we made was simple really, yet the issues that needed resolving! A motorbike very much more complicated so it's no surprise when recalls and delays happen really.

When it comes to informing customers - the best you'll probably get is a rough idea of what the issue has been. Even if the dealer is fed a story I doubt it'll be the whole truth. A company has to protect it's brand. It's all it has really. We all appreciate honesty, but airing laundry in public shouldn't be done as it can really damage your brand, and for what? A few issues that in a few weeks will be gone and forgotten, no brand damage. Remember the LC 1200RT suspension recall fiasco. It got dealt with. We moaned at the time, but everyone who owns an RT seems to love them still. BMW handled that issue almost perfectly (though I believe they should've sent new shocks to the dealer network rather than strip and fix the old ones - I wasn't happy about that bit) and it's done the brand little if any damage.

Man....I seem to have woken up very flippinsoffical this morning!

That's the S. Still no news on the R. Literally, nothing. If KTM can't give a delivery date, or even a reason for the delay by the end of the month, I'll be cancelling my order, and will revisit the R another time.

No need to spit...........

Just ride your other bike, it's no hardship, in reality
