Let's see what all the fuss is about

Expensive ornament ! Will it get used especially having 2 similar bikes and the one in front will always be the Ktm and certainly more rewarding to ride.

The KTM is faster, but in the short test ride I had, there were some minor niggles. The brakes aren't as good as my GSA, and there are a lot more vibes through the frame. The heated seat on setting 0 was quite effective! But, the torque was immense. My XR is faster, but it's all at the top end, which is pretty pointless in the real world, unless you want to live in fear of losing your license.

I'm looking forward to spending some quality time on the 1290 to see how good it really is, once I get used to it, and get some miles on.

As to the GS sitting there as an ornament, that won't happen. Getting back on the GSA afterwards, and spending the rest of the day on it, on all types of road makes you realise how good it is as an all rounder. It'll be a tough act to follow.

I'm in the midst of an unscheduled and unplanned change contemplation, out of curiosity, what has attracted you to the 1290S over the R? Is it just availability or are there other factors?

I'm currently on the now old model 1290T and had the 1190S previously, but find myself being strangely attracted to the 1090R (990A nostalgia perhaps?). Am I the only one with this strange calling/dirty secret?

The more I thought about it, the more I realised that the S is better suited to the sort of riding I do. If I'm being honest, I won't take it off road much, so having the 21" front wheel for mainly road riding probably isn't ideal. The only thing I would like on the S is manual suspension, but I'll play with the settings on the screen once I get it, and see if I can find the sweet spot. The fact that there have been production issues with the R just made my mind up for me.

Which colour did you go for Nutty.

Black i guess going by the BM you were on today.?

Enjoy.

Orange. It looks so much better than black, in the flesh. Great to meet you today.:thumb

yes i thought the brakes were very average, very different feel to a GS, like you, once i have done a few miles will be a better test. l love the boxer engine and if i could afford both would keep the GSA. i may try a cheap RS later in the year to give me the boxer fix.
