I was fortunate enough to spend most of last year riding across Canada and Alaska.

The first leg was from Vancouver to Anchorage and the bike was fine. I was adding octane booster because Canadian Premium is 91 Octane and I had been told in Australia, where I bought the bike, that it should be run on 95 octane.

The problems started in Alaska where premium is only 90 octane. I was adding the same amount of octane booster but the bike kept on going into limp mode with a message coming up on the display saying to ride it to the nearest service agent. I took the bike to a BMW service agent in Anchorage and they went through the prescribed steps for the error code (relating to the throttle valve control), short of changing the throttle body. It cost me $500 US but sadly it had no effect. After I topped up half a tank without adding any octane booster, because I didn't have any, the bike went into limp mode 6 times in 200 miles from Anchorage to the US border.

As an experiment, I didn't add any octane booster in Canada (91 octane), and rode from the Alaskan border down to Calgary and across to Nova Scotia. The bike went into limp mode twice in Novia Scotia.

Prior to the Canada Alaska trip, I rode the bike for around 20,000 miles in Australia on 95/98 octane without any problems.

I am currently living in the Uk and would like to ride in Morocco and possibly Central Asia, but I'm worried about a recurrence of the problems I had in Alaska. Has anyone had any problems fuel quality wise riding their GS in these parts? I know a lot of people have problems with their bike going into limp mode and it is not associated with fuel quality but there seems to be a strong correlation in my case.

This is what the manual says about the required fuel ratings. Interesting to see it mentions about a 'conversion' if the quality is not sufficient - possibly they mean a different fuel map/parameters are required to allow the Bike to run better on lower grade fuel.
Might be worth asking the question at a dealer if they have any knowledge of this.
