Hi,

Im very ignorant when it comes to motorbike communications. Never had any ear pieces or headsets in the past - just ear plugs on long distance journeys.
I want to pair my Garmin SatNav with something to give me audible instructions.
What is the minimum I need - nothing fancy, just basic?
Thanks for any advice.

A BlueTooth compatible ear piece or speakers, is what you need….. as a minimum and indeed as a maximum, too…... Without the BlueTooth, you’ll hear nothing.

Something like this, perhaps?

Plucked at random from a Google search of ‘simple bluetooth earpiece for motorcycle’

No doubt there are other cheaper things out there, via the usual Chinese sources. Me? I’d buy something from a UK retailer, not because it probably won’t be be made in China, but because I’d be able to send it back if I couldn't get it to work. There will certainly be more expensive things, too!

This is what you need, I have always liked these sets as they dont have a mike like other sets that get in the way, it picks your voice up from the earpieces somehow and always very clear.
Oh and it just happens I have one I can sell you as new.

Out of interest, I assume these fit inside the helmet. Do you still use ear plugs when riding or do these cut out some of the background noise?

Yes, the speakers fit inside most helmets.

This from a Google search: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0...-4c68-4748-b725-e1749543670b.pdf?v=1727183558

The positioning of the speakers in relation to the rider’s ears ears, both for comfort and sound can be critical.

They cut out no background noise per-se. You’d still be well advised to use ear plugs, irrespective of the journey’s length and / or whether you are using your navigation device. How well the speaker system in the example will perform with ear plugs in, is another matter. Prepare yourself for several pages…..
