Little project for 2010

I dont know if you saw the post of my R100RS but it is a beginning of a cafe racer conversion. I heard that flatracer.com has good R100 cafe racer versions but I only have internet access at work and never actually managed to get on it because that site is blocked for some reason.

The bike you bought looks very nice... can not believe how well they keep.

You mention the brembo brakes... I have a 78 R100... would it be possible to install the post 81 brembo brakes on a 78 model?

Very curious to see the results.

I see Rob's covered the brake question, I would of course have answered it as he told me the same thing a while back when I rang to pick his brains on which bike to look for for the project :D

Flatracer are based in London so might be worth your while giving Edgar a ring and arranging to go look at his stuff.

Found him very helpful answering questions and he's prepared to talk all night on the subject and the products he makes.

I've ordered various bits for the build from him as I've said wont be getting into it totally until I return from The Gambia but want to get some things such as paint and engine work started now ready for then. :rob

If you can't see the Flat Racer website these are some of the many pictures available to wet your appetite. :drool

Have sort of started a similar project with an R80. Undecided as to how far to go. Pillion peg/exhaust mounts should be cut off for aesthetics but that is crossing the point of no return! Do you modify the bike so it can be returned to standard or just go for it?

Would like to bend up an exhaust that runs under the seat a la R1100S -any hints on bending exhaust tube? Have a good mob here who can bend pipes up from drawings but this will be a suck it and see process. May cut and tack it then get them to bend up a copy.

Will watch your progress with interest :thumb

Intend to retain the rear exhaust monts for the new system, as for making a custom exhaust its not an area I know enough about to comment but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly. :augie

Undoubtedly great workmanship but that tank / seat doesn't do it for me - don't like the way the tank flange sits on top of the front edge of the seat. In fact I don't like the tank full stop :nenau

Horses for courses :)

Well the reasons for retaining (I never fitted it originally) the FJ fairing have been documented at length on the Gambia on an Airhead thread, as that;s a separate thread altogether I don't intend to pollute this thread by going over them again.

We all have different tastes (thank gawd) I'll stick with what I've planned and retain the snowflake wheels, got loads of other bits to waste my children's inheritance on rather than ditching a perfectly good late model set of wheels that I actually like.! :thumb

It's all conjecture, Roger

All that matters is that you like it....................feck the rest of us:thumb

This for me......... is the essence of a 'Cafe Racer' and looks truly gorgeous

I agree Johnny :thumb2
BUT until you get another Airhead, Stop winding us old folk up :eh:forry:rob

So off you go to your single cylinder [made in PRofC] chain driven piece of crap forum...

Or to the Oily side of the forum with boxer twins :augie

You will be welcome back with open arms, as soon as you get another proper Beemer :augie:augie:augie

:hide
By the way, this is the THIRD rewrite, the others were far more forthright :rob

I think the brake pipe issue is because it's an RS and the fairing was going to be refitted... whereupon correct fittings are in the said fairing :augie:augie

"Interesting" front brake pipe set up / oil cooler on the bike Roger. And then the solid pipe is tye wrapped onto the frame

Pretty much what Keith said, and Kenny is spot on with his assessment, already been talking to Venhill for the necessary lines :D

Had to make a choice between stopping work for lunch or stopping work for a fiddle with the bike, the bike won! :augie

Previous owner had been working on the bike for a number of years and had fitted stainless steel bolts (with copper grease) everywhere which made stripping parts easy.

Will pull the heads off later and get them in the post. :D

I've got one in my loft. 78 R100RS with the sports seat and stainless commando silencers :thumb2

Nice photo's Phil, food for thought there.

SWMBO has given approval to increase the stable so another project in the air.

Cafe racer project me thinks.

The way this is going we will have to have a gentleman's cafe racer weekend :augie

What you thinking of Paul?

Phil, as always great pictures, have them filed for future reference:thumb

Day 3 in Cassa Thunder and the heads are off, packed and off for hardened valve seats and a bit of a fettle by Steve Scriminger.

Barrels and pistons are in great condition, push rod tubes showing some corrosion so I've ordered a new set of stainless ones along with piston rings (no sign of contamination behind the old ones but when everything's stripped it seems best to replace them) along with the old style choke lever, cables and induction tubes for the delorto carbs. As I'm going to fit the old type alloy airbox and starter cover fom the earlier RS the choke lever will be a simple fit.

Rear wheels off and the brake caliper mount, support arm battery caqe, clamp and a number of other parts are off for powder coating.

Now just have to sort out the bits which are surplus to requirements, well it will give me something to do while I wait for Motorworks to deliver. :augie

Don't go too extreme on the whole Cafe theme.:rob On a good day I could be described as physically but not mentaly middle aged and I find Cafe racers are just soooo bloody uncomfortable to ride. I can feel my knee joints popping and my wrists are aching just looking at some of the pictures. It's one of those types of bikes that bring out the rose tinted specs. 90% of the people on the Airhead section have fitted handle bar risers and here they are encouraging you to put the handle bars on the front wheel spindle! Make it a nice roadster as the French would call it.:thumb2
