If i dont slow down and stop riding like a complete twat real soon there is going to be an 8GS in the scrappys and another biker in the morgue.

Another near miss today

Just cant seem to stop myself, anyone else feel like they have to ride as fast as they can everywhere, or is it just me!!!

you can have as many near misses as u want to. Its when somebody does the unexpeted that things go amis. Give yourself more room and still enjoy the ride.
If u feel that you are having too many near misses its time to do something. Every one else can't be wrong. Sorry for the lecture but u more or less asked for one. JJH

the near misses are mainly my fault, i think my reading of the road and anticipation of possible problems is quite good, its more to do with my speed than other road users. im not a poor rider just cant seem to control my right wrist and every fibre in my body wants to go faster and faster.

I do sometimes need a lecture, probobly just need to take a deep breath and not ride for a bit. hopefully that will help. Or maybe trade the 8 in for a 125...or a scooter

Maybe you should do a couple of track days, try to get the speed thing out of your system.Advance rider training maybe.I think i know how you feel,it`s the 800gs "noise" makes you want to crack open the throttle:augie

Even at my advanced age, I only really enjoy it when I'm pushing hard on the road. I find it's when I back off that I get complacent and make mistakes. I'm having an assessment with the local IAM staff examiner very soon just to brush up a bit.

Having just looked at your profile and seeing that you're in the forces, I wonder how much it's about risk taking. The only other guy I know who's in the Army, also rides pretty quickly on the road.......don't you Adam? :augie

dont get a 125 and think that its limitations will save you.
you'll just try even harder with only enough power to get in to trouble and not enough to get out of it. :blast

a wise sage (so - not me obviously :toungincheek ) upon hearing a similar tale, said
"have a :spank before you get on the bike - that'll calm ya down a bit"

no harm trying, eh? :augie

if i'm not on the throttle or the brakes, i'm bored, i'd rather give up, cant do inbetweenies, thats why i ride i suppose, most of my near misses dont freak me out cos i still seem to stay within my margin of error (inbuilt over many years):thumb:thumb, you have to draw yourself a line somewhere, freedom is the recognition of neccessity (or keeping your blood inside your veins)

why do you think i stuck tkc's on mine......:augie

also, 40 offroad feels like a ton on road....:D

Put TKC's on last Fri Rich, they scared me a bit for a couple of days, now i love them. im not sure im comfortable with the front end wobbling as much at 110mph up the wrong side of the single lane part of the A11 towards mildenhall as they did today when i was chasing some bloke on a ZX10 though! twat obviously thought i was just another old bloke on a BMW, didnt he get a surprise!

i was glad when i turned off the a11 towards Bury from Elveden))

Thanks for the comments guys, im sure i will be alright

I'm 22 years old, when I was 16 I was knocked off my moped by some twat BMW (or the irony) driver, needless to say the broken leg and 6+ weeks away from two wheels really woke me up.

My point being whilst I like to ride fast I'd like to think I can read risks pretty well, especially drivers approaching from side junctions.

Like the other say, perhaps a track day to release some aggression, perhaps an advanced training session with your local instructors.

mdw403 - You sound like you ride in a similar fashion to me and it is worrying at times not just for ones future health but also keeping your licence. I downgraded to the 800GS from a CB1000R to slow me down and while it is fast enough, it's not insane. Have done the bike safe stuff and advanced biker training (highly recommended IMHO as while riding fast it does make you safer - without doubt) and now doing Observer training but the urge to give it welly still exists. This may sound silly but the ONLY thing that slows me right down is not wearing full leather or full gear with body armour in it. Rode in Levis jeans and a leather jacket the other day and the feeling of vulnerability came right back, my speeds dropped right off and my average mpg improved by 9mpg. It's not an ideal solution but at least you ride slower.

Could always buy a Harley/Cruiser.

It's a tricky one mdw403. Be safe.:thumb

Definitely get on a track, and stop being a twat on the road, giving the rest of us bad names. If it was a close call for you - the perpetrator causing the problem, how do you think it feels for the others out there on the road who have to share your personal TT?

If you really think you're a fast nut, get a license and go racing, then you'll really find out how big your balls are.

I did, turns out I was a big girl! :blast

FWIW, :nenau
When instructing Advanced, i find them that say "I'm worried about my riding..."
always get more out of the Assessment / Training and become more skilled than those that say "no thanks, my riding's fine".

Always. ;)

The survival of the human race is built around our ability to learn from our mistakes. You've recognised the problem, now learn from it. Simples!

Go offroad as much as you can with it ( really offroad ). Don'T just take it on some unpaved smooth roads. I imagine you already have been offroad with it but maybe not enough to have your brain shift to what this bike is really made for. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arHSe_RwntQ

Oh and the Disco was a joke ( watch vid) and please slow down on pavement. If you crash offroad you'll have only yourself to blame. Pick her up and start over , it'S a much better adrenaline rush than getting cut off by a cage...

I used to drive like that everywhere, always on the throttle and caning it all over the place, used to think that the "near misses" where all part of the fun, enjoying the "rush" so to speak.

still drove that way when some doris pulled out in fron tof me 4 years ago and put me in intensive care for 4 weeks and intubated for 3, kinda changed my riding after that.

not saying that you need to have an accident to change your riding, just try anf think, what ig? what if that driver does this, or that driver does that?

also think of you loved ones, sure you wouldnt want them sat by your bed waiting for you to wake up and seeing you in pain, i know i would want to put any of my family and friends through that again, so i drive alot slower and am way more catious than before.
i still open the tabs though, but only when i know i can get away with it, ive have also done bike safe and other courses and a few of my mates that ride are coppers so im always asking questions and advice and this helps no end.

just be carful and listen to the voice at the back of your mind saying "what if?" and try and ignore that one that says "go for it! dribve like a c**t!"
wont stop you from haiving fun! after all, i still ride bikes and im still loving it! al though just at a slowere pace (and i ride a tricked up bandit 1250!)
