Hi all

I was looking for a GSA 1250 but not seeing too many second hand ones with the spec I want here in Ireland.

But I came across a S1000R 2021 model with every factory extra I could want and in the beautiful while colour, with 25k km on the clock but with a full BMW service history.

However I haven't ridden one as I thought they might be a bit intimidating but I am very interested in one and had a few questions.

Would that mileage be considered high? Or are these bikes as capable of high mileage as let's say the GS?

Is the S1000R comfortable for taller riders?

Also, I read a lot of comments on these being boring and to me, I take that as a compliment that BMW have made this bike so capable but also manageable.

Are they a joy to ride or do they scare the life out of you?

I was looking at the hornet sp new for similar money but I don't think it will be comfortable for taller riders.

Im continuing my search for a GSA but the S1000R really peaked my interest.

At this rate, it's going to be autumn before I secure a bike and I'll probably be regretting buying coming into the winter as I haven't been riding bikes in 7 years or so due to injuries.

Thanks for any advice.

I’ve got a S1000RR and it’s the easiest bike ever to ride .
Nice bike. I haven't had a sports bike since selling my fireblade and was thinking the S1000R might be a handful but hoping the driver assistance and electronics might make the 160 bhp a bit more usable on every day rides although I'm sure it would be hard to never use all the power in that beast while just on the road.

Honestly it’s a pussy cat untill you want to start getting crazy with. It , then it will go . But its lightness and amazing handling and brakes will hopefully help you stay out of trouble . It does sound like a sowing machine mind you

Hopefully I'll get to try and get a spin on the S1000R but not too many around my parts. The RR is gorgeous but I'm not sure my body could take a sports bike at the moment. The R might be a better fit for me. Serious amount of electronic gizmos and trickery on them from what I have read. Know what you mean about the sound 😂 but it's nicer than some and pretty distinctive too.

No idea about the ergos on the R as I owned an S1000XR in factor lowered trim as I am 5'8" which was perfect for me. Full height should be fine for lankier bods.

As for the wild side, my bike was a Gen 1 2016 model. Fewer bhp but also fewer nannying interventions. It was a pussy cat at lower revs and actually a very decent bike in alpine condition with tight hairpins. Wind on the revs above 6000 rpm and the nature of the bike changed to giggle inducing shenanigans without becoming scary (as long as you did not turn off nanny completely).

The 2021 bike is probably a Gen 2 with colour TV dash rather than the lovely Gen 1 analogue clocks. The Gen2 bike seemed to be nannied even more when I had them as loan bikes. I preferred the Gen 1 due to the wilder nature when you wanted it.

The top spec bikes with electronic suspension are very good. The quickshifter on the I4 bikes is a dream to use compared to the boxers. Mine did not have factory luggage so I fitted a Givi kit and toured France and Spain in the 5 years I owned it. I miss it sometimes but retirement means one bike not a fleet.

Wunderlich sell some nice bar risers and some lovely 15mm lower footrests that will help you if you are taller. BMW sells a higher seat and again Wunderlich sells an even higher seat at about 40mm. Lovely to ride too. A nice Loe Vince is compulsory 😁

Cheers mate, Thanks for the info on the parts, it's great to know that there are options.

Im not that tall (6'2" - 3") but need the leg room as long legs 🙄

That Leo Vince has quite a large bore 😁 bet it sounds seriously throaty!
